Forgive the ignorant question on shifting

I drive a standard 997 TT (LSE included). It drives beautifully, but I often get some "bucking" in 1st gear. Doesn't happen when I'm real slow smooth, but when I try to be quick (somewhat the point!) it happens a lot. I'm not (obviously) very experienced at this and would love some guidance. I have tried to narrow down when it happens (it's not always) and have not been able to yet, so I'm looking for thoughts on when this could be happening. Perhaps happens a bit more when the turbo boost is on.

    Thanks.

Re: Forgive the ignorant question on shifting

Is it happening under hard acceleration in gear or while engaging 2nd after/during the shift?

Re: Forgive the ignorant question on shifting

Hard acceleration in first gear. Problem probably releasing clutch too fast or slow, but amazingly (not too amazing if you knew me) I can't figure out which.

    Thx.

Re: Forgive the ignorant question on shifting

Do you have Sport Chrono and does the bucking happen in Sport mode? I've found the ECU re-mapping while in Sport mode can be overly sensitive.

Re: Forgive the ignorant question on shifting

Yep, I think I usually have sports mode on. I'll try it without that. Thanks!

Re: Forgive the ignorant question on shifting

Best things to do _immediately_ when bucking are to either floor it or push in clutch.

Re: Forgive the ignorant question on shifting

If you floor it I assume you let the clutch out all the way no? Sounds like your saying bucking means you're in a middle-ground and you need to make a choice...

Yes, if you decide to drive: hit gas hard.

If you have to stop: hit clutch.

My M3 with SMG in Sport mode (no "PASM" only a hotter throttle map) will start to buck too sometimes. Floor it or clutch it to deal with it.

More advice (from me, a dude on the internet ): let your clutch slip more when starting from a stop until you get the hang of it. (I'm _guessing_ this applies to you). This will guarentee more RPMs, more flywheel inertia and less chance you'll get that bucking feedback loop.

NOTE: Eventually you want almost zero clutch slip from a standstill; saves clutch wear and, engine has so much torque anyway, overrevving is unnecessary fro a stop sign.

Re: Forgive the ignorant question on shifting

It also seems (I'm not very sure) to happen more very soon after first getting in the car. Don't know if that makes sense.

    Thanks

Re: Forgive the ignorant question on shifting

Its difficult to diagnose the problem without seeing you drive, but maybe this is happening to you?

You hit the gas and let out the clutch so the car surges forward and you are pressed back in the seat so your foot inadvertently lifts off the gas pedal so the car slows down and you are no longer pressed back in the seat so your foot inadvertently presses back on the gas pedal so the car surges forward so your foot lifts off the gas and so on.

If this is what is happening to you, then you can fix this problem by more smoothly releasing the clutch as you press down the accelerator pedal also more smoothly. If you want to accelerate hard, then you must press down on the gas pedal even more as you are being pushed back in your seat by the car's acceleration. It may also help to move your seat forward so that your foot can more easily reach the accelerator pedal.

Re: Forgive the ignorant question on shifting

I wish it were not true, but very possible you're right. I'll play around next while driving. Thanks!

Re: Forgive the ignorant question on shifting

Oh BTW, my tip for closeness to clutch pedal:

Pedal should be all the way down and your knee should still be bent.

Or try this: get as close as you can until your clutch leg shin bone almost touches lower edge of dash.

With all this goes this: your wrists should be able to fold over the top of wheel.

Hope this helps (depends on your physique).

Re: Forgive the ignorant question on shifting

Good advice, MMD. Most people drive with their seat too far back to effectively manipulate their controls (steering wheel and pedals).

Re: Forgive the ignorant question on shifting

I tend to keep the seat closer when I'm likely to be clutching a lot - starting up at the house, city driving - and further back for highway cruising. I like to be able to keep the clutch actually on the floor when I'm stopped at a light.

That's not a good idea. Keeping the clutch pushed in at the light will affect it's durability.

Re: Forgive the ignorant question on shifting

I usually take the car out of gear and put it in neutral while I am waiting at a light. That way I don't need to use the clutch, just the brake pedal or hand brake.

Is this true? It makes sense.

Re: Forgive the ignorant question on shifting

How does keeping the clutch in affect duribility?

    TIA,

    Mike

Re: Forgive the ignorant question on shifting

It depends. There's wear on the throwout bearing if the clutch pedal is depressed. On the other hand, if you shift into neutral and release clutch, and then engage clutch and shift into gear and release clutch, you add some wear to clutch.

In general, if stopped a short time - a few seconds, I keep clutch depressed. If stopped for half a minute or more, I shift to neutral...
