Not to start a war, but as a self-annointed connoisseur of automotive styling throughout the history of the automobile, and as a rather prolific collector and student of such, I've always felt that the 911 made for an abysmal looking convertible..
Say what you will about 356 heritage, say what you will about how things were designed, and in what order... I simply believe, from a design aesthetic standpoint, that the upside-down tub style of the 911 only really works with a roofline. It's integral to the design. Lose the roof, and you've got little in the way of continuity or grace, you lose flow, the most elegant sight-line of the car is gone. It's like a pita sandwich with a huge bite taken out of it.
Only those who are "in love" with the 911, as a car, unconditionally, would find beauty in it sans roof, which is O.K., as I "get" the affinity for topless driving, and the romantic nostalgia tied to any car that has it's top down and cockpit open. From an emotional standpoint, the Cab is likely the winner as the "most beautiful". But from a pure aesthetic standpoint, leaving your love for top-down sporting hanging on the hook, it kills the essence of the 911 design.
Mercedes sure knows how to design a breathtaking convertible with the SL, throughout its history.
The original 1955-1957 Thunderbird is at its styling-best with the top down.
Just about all British sports cars were styled in a manner that made the top "optional".
But to me, the Porsche drop-top looks like a beautiful coupe, hacked, rather than a true convertible.
Hate me, boo me, protest me, I can take it!!!!
