After fueling the computer told me to...

Upon starting after fueling, the other evening, the onboard computer (not the PCM) flashed a message to check the oil level. I didn't get the "exclamation" or any other indicator other then the textual message in the cluster display. I was able to dismiss the message by pushing (or was it pulling) the stalk that controls those functions.

I have never seen this message before and yes, I've refueled a few times. I do check the oil level each time I start the car when it is cold. The level has been a constant "one bar" down for a few months. I was waiting for it to drop "two bars" down before topping up with oil (as I didn't want to over fill.)

The gas station I was at was one mile from my home. I took it easy and drove it softly home. I checked the level when I got home and it displayed "one bar" down (as it has been.) I waited until the engine cooled some and checked the level again. Again it was one bar down. I added about 200ml, checked the level. One bar down. I added about another 200ml, checked the level. The display reads full now.

What chain of events triggered the on board computer to tell me to check the level? Is this a normal event that I just have not seen before? Have I been blind to it for all of the previous fuelings?

    Signed,
    Curious in Denver!

Re: After fueling the computer told me to...

I have had this happen a number of times as well. I believe it is a computer glitch. The easiest way to deal with it is to turn off the car and restart it.

It always happens after filling up with gas and resetting the PCM display. There is another element in the mix that causes the display to mess up, but I have never taken the time to figure it out; it is easier to turn off the car and restart. My car is a 2005 C2S

Re: After fueling the computer told me to...

Not sure, but I think it happens if you don't go "hard to the right" with the key. IOW, you move as if you're doing the oil check, and not going to start the car. It's happened to me before as well and I think that's the cause. Seems that with the engine running, the re-sets work just fine.

Re: After fueling the computer told me to...

FWIW: when refueling this car I always put the pump nozzle on "medium" and let it fill automatically. When it shuts off by itself I consider the tank full and remove nozzle.

IOW, if you continue trying to stuff gasoline into the tank you can get yourself in trouble with the car's computer.

Oh..., I'm not sure if this is absolutely neceesary; I _heard_ overfilling CAN be a problem so I avoid it.

    Anyone know for sure?

This I don't get (not trying to mess with you ).

I'm GLAD there's no dipstick. One less thing to have to deal with.

Sit there and check your oil before you start car. Check oil EVERY time you start car. I think it's great.

Since we have no choice and have given up control of our cars to it's freeking computer and software anyway, might as well enjoy some of the benefits.

Re: After fueling the computer told me to...

I'm with you MMD. I love the convenience of an oil check being done electronically. I only pay attention to it after the car has been sitting there all night on a totally level surface with a stone cold engine. But I think I take an oil reading every time this is the case. Whereas, with a dipstick, I'm sure I would only bother once every few weeks.

But yep, a spare tyre would be great!

I agree MMD, I like the convienence of just waiting six seconds when the car is cold to have the oil level checked and displayed to me without having to fuss around with a rag and the engine bay.

I'm just confused why after filling the car with gasoline and restarting the onboard computer told me to check the oil level. If this occured each time I refueled I wouldn't be concerned. It's just that this was the first time that alert was displayed to me.

Mine is weird too. On rare occasions I drive away and the oil bars are still displayed!

I just shrug it off and hope it's smarter than I am and knows what it's doing and corrects itself.

I know..., I know..., that's ALOT of hope.

Re: After fueling the computer told me to...

I get this too. I think it might just count the number of times you start the car and every 10 time or so leaves the reading on the display so you *have* to look at it. I think it's useful - I'm an impatient xxxx sometimes and forget to check the oil when I drive off.

Doubt if it's a bug, but what do I know?

It's amazing what you will find if you read the manual.
    For instance:

    "Oil measurement during refuelling
The oil level is automatically measured during refuelling.
    Preconditions:
    1. ..........
    2. If the engine is at operating temperature, at least 5 minutes must elapse between parking the vehicle and starting the engine.
    3. .........."

Could that be the explanation that you seek?

It is amazing what you find when you read the manual. I've read the same manual as you yet I did not come to the same conclusion you made.

I don't believe I was stopped for 5 minutes. The tank is small and fills quickly.

Furthermore, if the level was automatically checked why did the onboard computer tell me to check the level instead of displaying the level that is supposedly just checked?
