Couple of points from EVO in Zuffenhausen

Pretty good article in the latest EVO after their visit to Zuffenhausen.
I'm only outlining the ones that we haven't heard yet (or so I think:
-997 Turbo engine will be 3.6 not 3.8L (Apparently the journalist got that info from a senior engineer)
-After talks with chief developer from engine, max capacity for -Flat 6 is 4.2L but such a volume would require very expensive ultralight materials in order to achieve good torque and reliability.
-Current Flat 6 is reaching end of its development, not bad for a 41 years old engine (Or engine concept shall we say)
-Direct fuel injection available next year at the earliest.
-DSG dual clutch to replace tiptro but not yet, not ready, probably with 997 MK2 (That's my guess)
-seats are 20mm lower than 996
-Only interior part carried over from 996 to 997 are the rear seats.
-Weight increments due to soon to be released US safety regulations (Thank you guys! ... Just kidding, safe is best! )
-997 engine emits 5% of the toxic gases the first 2L flat 6 used to!
That's all I can remember of the top of my head.
But so far, it's the best article I've read on the 997. I like EVO, and to my knowledge, they are the only ones who have been invited to Zuffenhausen to take a close look at the car.
Lastly, they said that although in pics, the 996 and 997 look very similar, when you have them next to eachother, the 996 looks really dated, Harm laggay can be a proud man.

Why not just buy an SL55 then? The 996TT is about as heavy as a sports car can safely get IMO - any heavier and you might as well drive a boat... Also, what kind of safety regulations are they talking about? Until they stop selling SUVs to soccer moms in the States, they can have all the safety regulations they want and they still won't help.

Thanks Fanchito for passing on all that info

The weight increase on the 997 Turbo might be in the 50 kg range. Let me see: the SL55 would be still almost half a ton heavier.
Using lightweight materials to substantially lower weight increases cost very much.
The only problem I see with weight is actually fuel efficiency.
Look how good my Cayenne Turbo handles, it is impressive for a 2.5 ton truck.
So even if the new 997 Turbo will be 50 kg heavier, it will be faster and more dynamic than the 996 Turbo.
And if Porsche is clever enough to add sufficient power, the 997 Turbo will be a huge success.

Regarding soccer moms and SUVs: I still think that most modern SUVs are very safe. It is always the driver who is to blame. A lot of SUV owners don't "adapt" to the weight and handling capabilities, they drive their trucks as they would drive an ordinary car.
But put a soccer mom into a sportscar and I bet the accident figures would be the same. Driver education is one point but common sense another one.
I watched several SUV drivers while I was on vacation in the US (me driving a SUV too, a Lincoln Navigator). Most of them were drinking, eating, discussing, even dancing and some drove with a trailer attached at speeds which are far beyond good and evil (remember: Germany allows max. 80 kph when towing and we have no speed limit and no such "monster" trucks like the Ford Excursion, etc.).

The main problem is that soccer moms buy SUVs because they think they're safe for the family, built like a "tank", heavy and high up over the street. And here exactly lies the problem: have they ever driven a real tank in the army? It is an art to be able to move these babies fast AND accurate without rolling over other cars on the street...or the general who watches you in the worst case.

I have to say it again and again: the driver kills, not the car.

Re: Coule of points from EVO in Zuffenhausen

Crash, even at about 1500 kgs, the 996 Turbo is still a featherweight compared to the competition.
SL is 1900 kgs by the way, so NO is the answer, don't just buy an SL55, you can't compare boats and cars

RC, what I wanted to say was that the "moms" shouldn't be driving such heavy machinery. IMO all they're capable of driving is a Fiat Punto... In regards to weight... I'd much rather have a 1300 kg 911 Turbo. In that case, the 500 HP engine would be enough to dispatch most everything on the street. Besides, even though technology advances make the car ever more dynamic, can you imagine the fun you could have in a car, which was 300 kg lighter and have all the modern technology? That's what I was trying to say, stop making cars so damn heavy, make them safer by making them lighter. In any case, so what if a Turbo costs 10.000 EUR more? If that gets me a lightweight aluminum construction and a car weighing in at less that 1300 kg, I'm all for it.

I know several guys who have SL55 and 360 and/or Gallardo who sheepishly admit that even in the deep curves of Napa, their pudgy, luxurious SL55 provides an equally satisfying driving experience to 360/G...yes, even in the curves.....SL55's a shockingly good handler for a big car; precise steering; intimidating exhaust note; in straightaways btwn curves its monster torque evens any deficit to 360/G in curves themselves; and it's a convertible.

P should use lightweight tech to reduce 997TT weight; cost is a BS excuse. 360CS costs only $200K; an '04 996TT X-50 w/PCCB and moderate options is roughly $150K. More important issue is resale value...where TT's weak resale values quickly even the ownership costs vs 360. Perhaps P should reduce 997TT volumes to help prop up resale values and reduce ownership costs?

Re: Coule of points from EVO in Zuffenhausen

can someone scan and post the evo article?

Re: Coule of points from EVO in Zuffenhausen

    anyone?

Re: Couple of points from EVO in Zuffenhausen

Which issue of EVO was it? June? July?

    Thanks in advance.
