    Re: Alfa Stelvio

    reginos:

Who really cares about Alfa Romeo anyway?

Alfa Romeo had it all in the 60s/early 70s and then they lost it all. Nowadays there are so many good cars around. Does anyone wait for Alfa Romeo to come back from the dead?

BTW I've been an Alfista myself and owned 4 in total, until I discovered BMW...then.

They fucked up with the 4C and they will do the same with the Stelvio and the Giulia.

The 4C had basically a more than one year long waiting list but the price was too high for the quality it offered, also dealers tried to make a buck or two with selling cars over MSRP. Also, dealer service (mainly Fiat and Alfa dealers) wasn't really great for such a small sportscar in the 60k EUR price range and I could continue with the issues they had.

Long story short: I don't get their strategy. The 4C could have been an amazing product for the masses, a small "Ferrari" for little money but they really didn't know how to market the car and to price it right.

Alfa Romeo first needed to improve their reputation and then ask higher prices. Something they apparently didn't (and still don't) understand.

You forgot to mention that it also had terrible steering.

Smiley I expected a go-kart like experience but it felt weird. The car is light and fun to drive but not as fun as such a small car with that tech/chassis is supposed to be. I also enquired about the car, never heard back from them over a year and then, when the 4C started to pile up at dealers (my local dealer had two and couldn't move them), suddenly I got an email from them. Smiley

For 49k and a proper marketing campaign, also some improvements in the steering/chassis department, this could have been a great car for young people or maybe even an inexpensive track tool.

    Re: Alfa Stelvio

i have tested Both 4c and giulia qv, the 4c have a lack of power and the cost is a bit to high, immagine the 4c with 320/350 hp...a complete differenti story it would have been a car faster than muuuuuch more eXpensive cars and maybe they would have SEL much more

the Giulia have nothing to envy comparse to a m3 c63...  it drives  better and it is really fast , only the interior quality is lower than the germans and the optional avaiable are far fewer especially the most modern things.

But you buy an alfa for it is a little exotic and maybe for the ferrari engine??? Since cars is always a loss of money...Why get a normal m3...??? I choose alfa over an m3 easy

    Re: Alfa Stelvio

The handling on the 4C is vastly improved by the addition of a fairly inexpensive set of spacer blocks on the front suspension wishbones that have been developed by an Alfa specialist here in the UK. They are a very popular mod in the 4C community around the world. There are supposedly changes coming to the 4C for the 2019 model year but it is not yet clear exactly what those are but they may involve a larger engine. If they add too much weight they will kill the very attribute that makes the car so much fun.

Alfa are developing their cars on a shoestring budget and are doing an impressive job in a short space of time. They have some really talented ex Ferrari engineers who could doubtless do greater things with more money and longer development times before launching their products. Their biggest hurdle is the dealer network and that is something that FCA simply does not have the product offering to overcome in the short term. The strategy is far too muddled across various markets with Alfa twinned in many dealerships with Fiat and Jeep which are simply not complimentary brands at all.

    Re: Alfa Stelvio

^very true. Giulia/Stelvio next to new Jeep Compass (really shitty product) is a terrible proposition for sales...

An Alfa & Abarth only showroom would make more sense...

    Re: Alfa Stelvio

I visited the Alfa Romeo showroom in central London (behind Selfridges) and it was a very downgraded sales point in one of the best locations in the world. Suddenly, the cars also looked cheap in that environment.

I inspected the Giulia accompanied by a very enthusiastic salesman and I found it very deficient in interior quality. My  VW Polo bought for €12.000 four years ago is superior in materials and the feeling of quality, even now. He asked me to book a test drive but I declined on the basis of the lack of perceived quality . If Alfa cannot make a quality interior how would I believe that all the rest of the engineering will be of a enduring quality after some time?

The problem with FIAT group cars is that they have deficits in areas which today's buyers consider as very crucial. The fact that they are good (but not tangibly superior)  in some other areas hardly compensates. Consumers got spoiled by German cars and FIAT product appear very poor buying propositions.

Talking quality interior again, i prefer alfa style over the after market feeling with those tablets in the Middle of the Dash from all germans....

    Re: Alfa Stelvio

You all know how much I adored that 4C and almost bought it.

As you say RC - two things kept me away - terrible dealer and workshops. And second the test ride. The steering and the brakes when steering are miserable. It lacks the go-cart feeling. It was much less enjoyable as anticipated.

Regarding your comment "the Ferrari for the masses" - here is the point. The car needs to run below 1000 units a year in order to be compliant. Therefore, it never been intended to be a mass product. Nevertheless, the monocoque and the design is adorable!

No doubt, the 4C looks great (quality could be a bit better but I never really cared). The driving experience is a different story, I expected more from Alfa Romeo.

A Giulia over the M3? I guess you never tried to sell a used Alfa Romeo in Germany. Smiley Smiley A M3 sells by itself. Alfa? Good luck.
