    "Official" word on TPMS retrofit

    Just got this from PCA.

Kinda confirms what we know, you can do it if you wanna spend.

    -------------------------------------

My car did not come with TPMS.. Is it possible to retrofit the factory
TPMS?? The aftermarket kits that I have seen don't look that attractive

    Answer:
With all of the integration with the systems, you could do it but it would
be pricey. There are 4 antennas, 1 for each wheel and the sensors in the
rims and the control unit. Now to wire it up and get it working probably
would be over 1500.00, just to start.
I would to try and live with one of the aftermarket systems.

Re: "Official" word on TPMS retrofit

Interesting enough I called Circle Imports in Long Beach, CA and asked the Porsche service manager if it was possible to retrofit the TPMS. His response was that unless it came from the factory already installed they would not or could not retrofit it. He said that installation cost was not a limiting factor but rather they would not do it. Any ideas as to a reliable after market system would be greatly appreciated.

Re: "Official" word on TPMS retrofit

Why would you want to do this? You can have my TPMS for free. It's terrible.

Re: "Official" word on TPMS retrofit

What problems are you having with the TPMS? I am always concerned with low profile tires and no spare that I could come up flat or at least notice a problem before it got any bigger. The people at Circle said they could not even install it even if I wanted one. So, I guess you are safe for now. LOL :>))

Re: "Official" word on TPMS retrofit

    Heh.

TPMS is inaccurate; tire pressures are always 2-3 psi higher than what the display shows, tested against three different longacre gauges.

It also tells you that you are about to die in helll on track when you dump pressure for track use. I screams at you and is annoying. It cannot adjust from low cold track pressures to hot pressures and gives flat tire warnings that you have to ignore at 150 mph. Then when you get home and refill it takes a long time to recalibrate.

Re: "Official" word on TPMS retrofit

For us non-trackers the TPMS is highly desireable. Because there's road debris everywhere in the real world it will save your us$1500 wheel from destruction; it may even save the tire.

I think Carlos indicated that he had no clue that his tire was flat and if it weren't for the TPMS warning he'd have ruined it.

As far as whom to believe? I'd say the PCA guy (Peter Smith) knows more than the dealer service guy. What's funny is "some guy" at your dealer service is just repeating what he heard, thinks he knows it all, and isn't checking if to see if he's correct (just like the news whores on popular TV).

Re: "Official" word on TPMS retrofit

Here's another opinion. I ordered it for my 06 cabriolet. It is very useful for maintaining a consistent set of TPs through the year. I'm not messing with the TPs for track use so that's not a factor for me. What is important is early notice of a problem and to get the optimal treadwear on these rubberband tires. So far with 11,000 miles on the car the tires are wearing evenly.

Retrofitting the TPMS is possible but extremely painful in the price department. As I understand it the longest lead item in these cars today is the wiring harness. As such, it is custom built for each car and the list of options therein. If you left out TPMS, then it would need to be added, with additional wires strung around, linking the antennas, etc. to a black box within the car. It would be very expensive after the fact. Of course, each wheel needs the sender which would require the tires to be dismounted and remounted. And, BTW, that latter step has to be repeated again in 5-7 years once the lithium batteries die in those sensors. ($75 each for sensors).

    Dan

    I like them.

Re: "Official" word on TPMS retrofit

Ok, where is a dealer or install facility that would do this. I keep calling around and get stonewalled each time. If anyone has a recommendation for a reputable installer please let me know. As far as price is concerned I am how you say "sitting down"!! Thanks for any help in this area. I am always concerned driving any long distance without knowing if I should have known or could have avoided a problem before one exists. Thanks.

Copy the PCA Q&A above and shove it into the dealer's face.

Go to the manager or the Owner of the dealership if you have to and say you demand "Excellence!"

It's like they don't want to learn new things.

Tell us what you really think, MMD..

Re: "Official" word on TPMS retrofit

and from a similar PCA post: additional TPMS wheel sensors/transmitters cost $50 each ($200 per set of 4) - a reasonably priced Porsche item to have on your additional set of wheels.

Probably closer to $400 for 4 with valve stems
