I have seen a camouflaged 997 Turbo yesterday!

On the Autobahn, close to Stuttgart, I have seen a heavily camouflaged 997 Turbo.

Car was exactly looking like all the well known photos. Very wide body. Extremly huge inhausts behind the door (from the top till the bottom). The complete front looked much more wide than the 997 front. Exact body shape couldn't been seen under the camouflage, but I assue more differences to the 997 then the 996TT to the 996. The car looked very massive and wide wide wide (hope not that the wideness was due to the camouflage!).

Congrats dude! How about the rear spoiler?

Rear Spoiler was camouflaged - but looked not very different to the actual (could have been part of the camou?).

Are you sure it was a 997 Turbo?

Re: I have seen a camouflaged 997 Turbo yesterday!

    Absolutley sure!

Car was damned strong camouflaged. It seems to be very very wide (still not sure in because of the camou or if the car it is really). But - the inhausts on the side have been exactly large as on any picture seen so often before.

Car was 20 km away from Zuffenhausen on the A81.

I have heard that car is the 997 C4S.

    - Why should a 997 C4S need to have a air-inhaust in front of the doors??

Like you said, you don't know whether the car was just heavily camouflaged. Maybe the air inlets are part of it. I'm still not sure whether the 997 Turbo will even be here. The 6speedonline crowd mostly seems to think that there won 't be a Turbo until the 998, but RC says that there will be.

Dock, there are so many camoflaged prototypes driving around, you never can't say "THAT car is...".
I believe Lars because he lives near the factory and in the past he posted some very interesting pictures and infos on a german speaking forum. He's a real Porsche nutt too and he has an eye for Porsche cars and modifications and this is what counts.

I just wish he would have his camera with him all the time but I have to admit that I also forget my camera at home from time to time and because of this, I missed a nice shot or two in the past.

Re: I have seen a camouflaged 997 Turbo yesterday!

I like the fact it has a very wide body, of course, you lose drag but it looks so good!
Aready the standard 997 is 3 cm wider than the 996 at 180 cm, that means the future turbo, should be around 186 cm no? Almost as wide as a Modena, sweet.
    Thanks Lars.

... and a fixed turbo rear wing could be part of the camo, but IMO also suggests its the Turbo since they don't usually use fixed turbo type rear wings on the carreras when camouflashed to my knowledge, they alsways had the up/bown wing even when camouflashed.

Re: I have seen a camouflaged 997 Turbo yesterday!

Will the 997 Turbo have a larger fixed wing like the 993 series and earlier models, or will it be some half-assed fixed/retractable thing like the current 996 Turbo/Turbo S cars?

Re: I have seen a camouflaged 997 Turbo yesterday!

    Hi Erik,
I thinkn it will be like the present turbo's. Those huge rear wings are history with todays aerodinamics.

Re: I have seen a camouflaged 997 Turbo yesterday!

Yeah i sorta figured....sad but true. I loved the whale-tails.

I've had two PCNA friends (normally "in the know") tell me there would not be a 997 Turbo.

Then Porsche would be in real trouble.
It can't be excluded that the new upcoming 911 Turbo will be a 998 and not a 997. But right now the code is TOP 2 as far as I heard and nothing indicates a 998 Turbo.
Porsche would upset a lot of customers worldwide if they build a 997 and then they build a completely new 998.
But as I said: it can't be excluded that Porsche changes the type numbers but this doesn't say anything. There is no generation "jump" for the 911 Turbo, the next 911 Turbo will be the successor of the current one. And the 996 Turbo S indicates that the 997 Turbo isn't actually too far away. I'd say latest summer 2006 we see a new 911 Turbo.

My contacts first said the "next" Turbo was two years away, not comitting to identifying it as a 997. Then they later said "It's at least two years away, and it may not even be in 997 form".

I really don't mind one way or the other what it turns out to be or when it's released... just passing on the information.

Re: I have seen a camouflaged 997 Turbo yesterday!

Dock, I heard that there was (is?) a discussion going on at Porsche if the new 911 Turbo shouldn't be more spectacular regarding looks and technical details to cope with the (upcoming) competition.
But I recently heard that Porsche wants to move on according to their initial model strategy, just with a few additions and changes to release dates.
My information is of course based on rumors from Porsche employees, employees of Porsche suppliers, anonymous sources, Users and some friends. It can't be excluded that Porsche plans something radical with the upcoming 911 Turbo but personally, I really doubt it. It wouldn't make sense since all upcoming models like the Cab and C4S will be based on the current 997 and the buyers of 997 models would surely feel very bad if the 911 Turbo would look completely different.
One thing might be possible though: the 911 Turbo could already include the look of the 997 facelift as the 996 Turbo did with the 996 facelift one year before.

The biggest surprise could be the introduction date of the Turbo: it could be earlier than many people thing, I already heard summer 2006 but just today I spoke to somebody who saw a car "somewhere" with camoflage only on the rear and the side air inlets and he said the 997(?) Turbo looks almost ready to go.

Perhaps 998 is the model code for the 997 Turbo?:)
    Like 965 was for 964Turbo..

Not excluded as I said. But there won't be a huge design difference between the 911 Turbo and the 997.

Re: I have seen a camouflaged 997 Turbo yesterday!

    RC,

I'm pretty sure, that Porsche is in the position to drop out the new 997 Conv. as well as the next 997TT within a very short time frame.

The Turbo I've seen was heavily camouflaged (tells me, that it really will look different from the actual and the 997) but - we both now the practice good enough to say, that under a camou, a 100% finished car could be!

So - I guess to see the Conv. next spring and maybe on the IAA next year the new Turbo (against that stands, the situation with the Boxster, this is expected to be presented on the IAA, too.).

Re: I have seen a camouflaged 997 Turbo yesterday!

    RC,

what do you think? What is a new 997 turbo going to cost?

I could live with "only" 460 - 480 HP if it is for a fair price.

I wouldn't buy a turbo with over 500 HP in a price range that is near to a GT2.

    mobile

Re: I have seen a camouflaged 997 Turbo yesterday!

Hmmm - I guess as the price on the 997 raised by almost 700 Euro , the Turbo will not raise much more!

Looking at it from PAG's point of view, and considering that your "two PCNA friends usually in the know" seem to have blabbed everything they have known up until now, you begin to understand why PCNA currently seems to be short on information even on near-future model plans.

    Well, that's not quite it.

Both of these guys don't tell me anything that they can't get away with "legally". Many times they are stone cold silent on issues I ask them about. Sometimes they tell me that it must just be between the two of us, which I respect 100%.

Porsche's problem sometimes is that they develope their five year plan every three months.

Re: I have seen a camouflaged 997 Turbo yesterday!

Porsche also said no more Turbo after 1989.

Just to be clear, my contacts didn't say there wouldn't be another Turbo, just maybe not a 997 Turbo.
