    Vacuum/ac hose chaffing

    Something I noticed on my 997turbo that other owners might monitor. Viewing the engine, the top right vacuum hose showed chaffing on the top. When I inspected further, I noticed a small electrical wire harness that comes from the engine compartment and travels up the right engine hood hinge; supplying power to the cooling fan and engine compartment light. Well, it seems this small electrical wire harness "buckles" slightly when the engine hood is closed and comes into contact with the vacuum hose; thus the chaffing occurs during engine vibration. I inspected a couple of other 997 turbos (one new and the other with some miles on it), and each one had the same problem. The quick solution was to apply a plastic "quick-tie" around the wire harness connecting tightly to the right engine hood hinge. This takes the slack out of the wire harness and creates space separating the wire harness from the vacuum hose. If anyone else found a better solution, would be interested

    sounds like this might be the problem reported a couple of days ago as a potential recall...hard to believe theyd offer 250 bucks as an incentive to get this in for repair

    The vacuum/ac hose chaffing problem is not attributed to the $250 recall program. The $250 recall program is associated with an improper half inch vacuum T connector. The chaffing is my observed occurrence on a one inch vacuum/ac hose.

    Not sure of this exact situation but here's an idea. Get clear vinyl tubing of the proper diameter. Slice it lengthwise and then slip it over the wire or hose. Tape or cable-tie it into place.

    Good idea - maybe even the black cable loom that audio shops use (Radio Shack)...but I still need a picture to see where to use it.

    im not sure if this is the condition that is percieved as a problem ...but in looking at the engine in mine i believe it is...1. is electrical wiring to the fan? and wing raising motor? in any event it is to long ( commander, can this ever be a problem ? ) and when the engine compartment lid is closed results in a 180 degree bend at arrow #2....as you can see ive solved this un-elegantly with a zip tie to the adjacent oil line ? which reduces the effective length enough that the wiring dosent crimp and just transitions up the support bracket when closed, open was never a problem....

    im open to better solutions,say a black zip tie which porsche has made liberal use of in the same area
