Value of car after engine replacement

If our cars get a new engine (because of mfgr defects) under warrenty from Porsche, will THAT effect trade-in values?

To be honest, I would be a liiiiiittle wary of buying a car with such a past, even if all numbers _officially_ "matched" and it had a year or so original warrenty still in effect.

Would you feel the same about keeping your car after engine replacement or would you become a little more anxious to trade it in?

Re: Value of car after engine replacement

These cars are by no means limited production or anything of the sort. As such, there is no correlation between a particular body and an engine. If Porsche AG can wave the magic wand with a piece of paper that says they did that then it just doesn't matter. Now, put down the mouse and go drive it.

I'd actually feel better knowing the engine wasn't going to grenade on me if new.

If I owned a run of the mill 997 maybe I would be be looking for any excuse to 'trade' in the car. I don't buy run of the mill cars so I keep mine a long time. (Sort of like wives with some people)...

Re: Value of car after engine replacement

All things being equal, I would buy the car that's never had an engine transplant. I don't think I'm alone. Therefore I think it's safe to assume there will be a negative impact to resale value, especially if the car is low mileage.

    If they find out, yes

Re: Value of car after engine replacement

Just curious, how would you know if you bought a Porsche with an engine that was replaced under warranty? When Porsche replaces an engine they change all the records for the car and at that point it shows the replacement engine as the "original" engine. In other words, years from now when someone wants to make sure a car has "matching" numbers, a car that had an engine replaced by Porsche will appear to have the original engine.

The little white paper sticker that they put in your owner's manual does not show the engine serial number, it only shows the engine type. If you tried to research the car's history with PCNA or PAG their records would reflect the replacement engine as the engine that belongs with the car.

So, I don't know how or why a replacement engine would necessarily cause a decreased resale value.

Porsche Porsche Porsche and them ongoing engine replacements
    Will it ever end????

Re: Value of car after engine replacement

actually if you request an ecu scan of your car the printout will have the cars engine #....and while they say the certificate of authenticity will have the engine # it dosent, or at least mine didnt

Re: Value of car after engine replacement

roadtrip is 100% correct. None of the vehicle documents I got with the car stated the individual engine serial number. Even the "EU Certificate of Conformity" only listed the engine type as M97/01 (or something like that).

However, when you connect a PIWIS terminal to the car, you can easily find out the individual engine serial number.

The question is whether a future buyer could compare the current PIWIS readout (stating the engine serial number for a replacement engine) with the original engine serial number from factory records?? That would be the only way I could think a future buyer could discover that an engine replacement had been carried out.

Re: Value of car after engine replacement

Porsche has left themselves an out these days. The engine number doesn't appear on anything the customer will ordinarily see. Only a special scan will reveal it. And that can change in a heartbeat. I wouldn't sweat it. My certificate of conformity is purposely vague from PCNA. Years ago the engine serial number WAS listed on the piece of paper that I got with my cars beneath the VIN.

You're right. The documentation is lacking and it may be extremely difficult, if not impossible, to ascertain whether or not the engine has been changed as the certificate of authenticity doesn't include a specific engine serial number, only an engine number and type.

Regarding the certificate of authenticity, PCNA goofed up on my first certificate, stating that my 911S (completed on January 25, 2006) had an "M96" engine. Upon looking at the engine, near the oil drain plug, I saw a stamp "M97," which is what it should be for a 911S. I took a picture of it with my cell phone camera and emailed it to PCNA. A few weeks later I received a new certificate of authenticity with the corrected engine number and type on it.

It looks great in the frame that I bought from a local frame shop, but it wouldn't in any way indicate whether or not I ever had the engine replaced.

Maybe that would show up if someone had the Porsche certified check run on it.

Re: Value of car after engine replacement

Originally I would say I would be less likely to buy any used car which had an engine replacement.

Having been through the replacement process myself, I would say I'd be more unlikely to buy any 997 with the uneven sooty tailpipes problem, than a 997 which has had its engine replaced.

Re: Value of car after engine replacement

To me if a car has the engine replaced under warranty that is all good. If I was that worried about it I would not buy a Porsche. Hey like I have said before cars are made by man and men are not perfect. There are bound to be issues with everything.

Re: Value of car after engine replacement

On an older 911, it mattered, because the motors could be rebuilt (current GT and Turbo motors still are) and the crankcase and chassis could be married forever.

Since the 996, the motors have become disposable (engines are commonly exchanged and not repaired), so it is common to have a newer motor than the chassis. Not a big deal...

Anyone buying a Porsche 996/997 should know to ask if the engine has been replaced. The RMS issue is well known. If asked, a seller must disclose whether the engine has been replaced. Otherwise the misrepresentation would probably be sufficient to rescind the deal even after delivery. Therefore, it is likely that upon disclosure, the value of the car will be lower.

Re: Value of car after engine replacement

My guess is 15-20% of buyers would ever ask if engine replaced. Of those maybe 5% would get a truthful answer. And, of the 15-20%, 2% would ever verify on their own. So I'd say if an engine had been replaced on any given car then maybe 7% of buyers would ever know. And of the 7%, 5% would not buy so the seller would just find someone else. The result is an engine replacement would probably just go undetected to the next buyer.

Re: Value of car after engine replacement

The nice thing about an engine replacement is you'd be 95% correct to think Porsche got it right the second time. If they can't "always" get it right with two tries why would anybody ever think there's anything special about Porsche?

That claim they make about "Excellence is Expected?" If they didn't get it right after the second attempt (doing something they SHOULD have gotten right by doin' once!), I'd shove that expression where the sun don't shine and never buy another Porsche again.

Oops, might be the beer talking... .

Re: Value of car after engine replacement

I don't think how well the job is done the second time depends in any way on the fact that you had bad luck the first time. Sh*t could happen again!

It just seems statistically less likely to poop on you again.
