Thinking about a DB9 Volante - opinions please

    Hi guys,

My other ML63 arrived today and I'll be picking her up tomorrow. I don't know if I want to keep it - was thinking about trading it in with the Carrera S Cab for a DB9 Volante.

Just would like to know what your thoughts are and problems to watch out for. Also isn't the DB9 to be replaced soon? It has been in production for a good couple years now.

    Opinions appreciated, thanks.

Re: Thinking about a DB9 Volante - opinions please

Great cars but bad mechanics. I would always fancy one simply for sound and presence...

Re: Thinking about a DB9 Volante - opinions please

The dealership here is the best looking one out of them all (Ferrari, Lambo etc.) IMO - I'm sure it's a different story here?

Re: Thinking about a DB9 Volante - opinions please

Coming from a 996 C4 cab, I did not like the DB9 volante. Handling is too soft, car is heavy so you don't feel the increase in HP as dramatic. All other points are great (finish, noise...).

I am getting the AMV8 roadster instead, much more involving, more sporty setup, and cheaper for a car better suited to me. Handling felling is still a notch below the 911 though as it is a bit smoother. But it feels more refined. I did one hour of back to back driving last week but with a V8 coupe as there are no roadster in the US yet, but all reviews put the roadster very very close in handling to the coupe. I will try the roadster as soon as the dealer gets one to test drive. Loved it. And the noise again...

Re: Thinking about a DB9 Volante - opinions please

I have had a DB9 coupe for almost 2 years with any problem.
The car is beautiful and considering how many cars you have I would buy it with no exisitation

Thanks for the input SciFrog - the handling I don't mind. I want this car for a casual cruiser That is what the C2S Cab was for anyways. I do all my hard driving in the Lotus.

I love the sound of the AM Vantage, drove it last year and the only set back was the perfomance of the car. It was SLOW in comparison with anything in that price range. Even an E46 M3 would give it a good run.

Any thoughts on when the replacement might be coming?

Re: Thinking about a DB9 Volante - opinions please

    Mike,

I don't think the DB9 replacement is due for a while yet - they've got the DBS, Rapide etc and possible Vantage Sport coming 'soon', and then the Volante would be well behind the Coupe release too.

It's not just the softness of the Volante that has been criticised, but it's torsional stiffness too so it's not had the best of write ups even as a cruising GT softtop. Not knowing what the roads are like where you drive this may prove a downer. But you're spot on with looks, noise and straight line performance..mmmm V12

I'm at Gaydon for the factory tour tomorrow so I'll see if there is any more info. Doing the colour choosing bit for my forthcoming V8 Roadster

    Rich, I envy you!

Like I said, I'm going to be babying this car. So I doubt I would know better from what the "critics" say.

Phoned AM just now - they have 2 black Volantes available immediately! One is black on black - the other is black on beige. Going to have a look this weekend

Re: Thinking about a DB9 Volante - opinions please

Let me know how toro/sahara looks like

Mike, as long as you are looking for a GT cruiser, the DB9 will do fine. But you might get bored with it with all the toys in your stable

About V8 performance, it is close to non turbo 911 but of course for a higher price. The interior alone is worth the higher price tag. Anyway, for the US, I was not looking at absolute performance, more at the package as a whole. The "experience" is worth the extra dough IMHO.

    Pleeeaaaseee...

Tell you what, I'll swap you the 430..

Re: Thinking about a DB9 Volante - opinions please

I have driven a DB9 Volante and the car has no brakes and I didnt like the driving impression at all... I would suggest to go and test drive one first.. Why dont you go for DBS ?!

Re: Thinking about a DB9 Volante - opinions please

Mike , get a superleggera for hardcore instead of a open top car but if you insist about a open top car, what about Gallardo spider or the upcoming 997TT Cab

Re: Thinking about a DB9 Volante - opinions please

How about a 997 turbo cab?

Re: Thinking about a DB9 Volante - opinions please

    Mike,

I would suggest looking through the AMOC.org site as well. Lots of good info there.

I want a convertible. I've got too many coupe's at the moment. Love the open air feeling, I'm not bored of the 911. Just never had an Aston before so I'm just lurking on the idea.

Hi SciFrog - don't want another 997. I did the same mistake with the SL55 and SL65. Same cars except with more power. I got bored of the SL65 within 4 months.

The 08 or 09 G's will have a new interior, will not share any buttons etc from Audi. Will wait until that happens and have a look

Are you sure there will be no more Audi reminiscents in the interior?

Or does that mean Audi will sell Lamborghini, now they've got the R8/R10.

I'd say don't get the DB9 then. Save the cash for the CGT

I'd rather be safe than sorry

Re: Thinking about a DB9 Volante - opinions please

mike, i agree about the power of the vantage, but i drove the db9 cab and was very disapointed; power is not impressing at all, and i had the imprssion that the vantage is overall better and better built. and it has less mechanical problems for sure. if you feel like an aston, IMO go for the vantage cab.

Re: Thinking about a DB9 Volante - opinions please

If you want more power on the Vantage, there is always the prodrive upgrade (415hp). Information about it is still scarce, especially about the warranty.

Thanks for the input Dimitri! I suppose I need to test drive the Volante to be 100% sure, maybe I don't even like the car after the drive.

Faced with a choice like that, I'd bet you'll take both!
I don't suppose anybody is dumb enough to bet against me?

This video will answer all your questions Mike

Just listening to this car start would make me buy one if I had that kind of money. IMO the DB9 Volante would one of the most perfect cars to just cruise around in on a lazy sunday and enjoy life. If you feel like you really want to DRIVE instead, you can always jump in the LP640 or F430....
(+ 10 bucks says that your girlfriend will love it )

One of the most beautiful looking and beatiful sounding cars in the world - period. Just get one, don't worry - be happy!

    Those exhaust notes are amazing!

here is a DB9 at wide open throttle! looks pretty damn quick

Re: Thinking about a DB9 Volante - opinions please

Seriously Mike, a DB9? Great looking and sounding car, but the quality is poor and it's terrible to drive - even your new ML is far better and more fun to drive! Keep the Carrera and ML, you'll regret later, I know I would.

Looks amazingly quick, sounds great, looks great

    yet

some dump on it. Too bad we don't have a vanquish or DB9 owner here. I've only read 1 12 cyl. am owners coments on a forum. He did have trouble with his vanq. But that shouldn't taint all of them.

It's a gt, not a track car. The vantage owners here seem happy. I say the vanquish is still one of the most desirable cars on the planet. One of the VERY few i would put equal to my 928 in the desire to own category.
