    MPSC mileage on 997 GT3

Does anyone know approximately how many miles can we get out of the MPSC tires on a 997 GT3 assuming street use. I have about 1100 mi and I am not sure that I will get to 3000 before having to replace the rears. The front tires look like they will last a litttle longer but not 2x as much. Can anyone comment on this?

Re: MPSC mileage on 997 GT3

Not quite sure about the new generation of PS Cups operate not on a standard mileage/tread basis but rather on a heat cycle basis.

That is, they are made with a special compound that when heated up, the particle bonds are chemically different than when cold and thus more adhesive, and when cooled down again, the chemical bonds between the particles reform, but slightly different than before.

With a semi slick tire of this sort, they are subject to a lifetime determinned by "heat cycles" as in how many complete "cycles" they are brought up to operating temperature ,andthen allowed to cool down.

After about 10 cycles they are useless for competition use, 15~ they become dangerous for street use.

This is because on the street they rarely obtain the operating temperatures they need to perform optimally, and also cool down too quickly if they do reach it.

Hope that explains how these tires work.

The new generation is supposed to be more friendly for street use, since they are OEM, but keep the above in mind. Especially about optimal operating temperatures for high performance tires.

For the best street use I would recommend Michelin Pilot Sport PS2

Re: MPSC mileage on 997 GT3

How do I know how many heat cycles my tires have and how does this relate to the tire wear indicators? Can the tire be dangerous even if it still shows it has enough tread?

Depending how hard you drive on the street, you may have heat cycled the tires every time you go out.

You will notice that the maximum grip that can be obtained out of the tires is diminishing no matter how hard you warm them up (takes a lap or two on the track, and mabye 20~ minutes of highway driving...).

The tread bars are not a proper indicator with these tires.

Re: MPSC mileage on 997 GT3

I have done 6500km on mine and more to go. Little track work included... but you should get at least 4000mi out of them

Re: MPSC mileage on 997 GT3

I think it is nearly impossible to heat cycle the tires without tracking them. MPSC's have no grip until 180F and I imagine this version is not quite so severe. You can buy a cheap pyrometer to check tire temps, but I bet you'll never see 150F on the street, unless you drive really hard in the corners for a long sustained period on a sweltering hot and sunny day...

Re: MPSC mileage on 997 GT3

I had sport cups on my m3, they lasted about 2-3k

I've been told 5k on the rears.

Re: MPSC mileage on 997 GT3

Once again, MPSC life is not solely determinned by mileage.

However, if you can assertain that they have not been heat cycled to the extreme, you can indeed go by the tread bars.

all that said, to answer the original question, 3000-5000 miles seems to be the ballpark.
