Right. To state the obvious: when water temp is up to spec it means cooling system (mainly water jacketed cylinders) is good to go. When _OIL_ temp is where it should be it means crankshaft, camsahfts etc are good to go... . Oil temp should be where it's supposed to be before engine gets stressed.
So..., when you think about it the temp guage it there to tell you when something goes wrong with the cooling system.
The OIL temp tells you when the engine is warmed up OR something has gone wrong.
