I loved the movie too. I'm a big Anthony Hopkins fan.
To be frank, I wasn't that convinced by Ryan Gosling's portrayal of the character he was playing. Sure, he was the 'cocky, arrogant prosecutor with a 97% success ratio' but he just didn't seem believable to me as a lawyer.
Beautiful home too...just like what I would build. I liked the old BMW 635 CSI too which Gosling drove. Lovely old car...
About the plot, wasn't it just a bit TOO coincidental that the hostage negotiator who approaches Hopkins is the same guy that is having an affair with Hopkins's wife? That the same policeman insists on actually being present during the interrogation thereby rendering his own evidence and any evidence given by Hopkins in his presence both inadmissible? That there was an opportunity to switch the murder weapon with that policeman's own gun?
Sure, Hopkins's character PLANNED all these things. I know Hopkins's character is an incredibly precise man, an aeronautical engineer who builds clocks and owns a number of Porsches....(only a Porsche is a precise enough car for this man
But how could he be 100% sure that all these plans would indeed happen?
Having said all that, I thought it was very clever that Gosling found a way to render the 'double jeopardy' rules irrelevant by arguing that the acquittal on charges of attempted murder could not be a bar to a prosecution on a charge of murder once Hopkins had switched off the life support machine...
I have to say I'm no expert on the California penal code nor am I admitted in the State of California so I'm no expert in their laws...
We did have similar rules (called 'autrefois acquit' or the rule against double jeopardy) in this country until a year or so ago (but thanks to David Blunkett and bloody New Labour, we don't have those rules anymore even though these rules had worked perfectly well for centuries).
All in all, I gave that film 4 stars out of 5. I enjoyed it very much...I would warmly recommend this film to others here....it's still on general release here in the UK...maybe it was out on general release in the US a few months ago? They often get to see Hollywood films months before we do...
