    Tiptronic Blipping!

Back in 2003 I ordered a new 996, I waited 6 months for it but hated the tiptronic so much I sold it and bought a manual 997.

The other week, my buddy lent me his 987S - I watched him drive it and he drove it like a manual - it felt incredible fast and the changes were as aggressive as a manual! As I was coming to a set of lights in 3rd, I took my foot off the accelerator and let the car roll, I just manually changed down to 2nd when the lights changed and I hit the accelerator again, the throttle blipped! It sounded awesome, I did this about 10 times and it was just like heel toeing in a manual! It works better with the car in sport mode if you have sports chrono but trust me it worked really well.

Not sure if the previous generation of cars had a different tiptronic manufacturer but I am a lot more impressed with the new one than I thought I would be.

If I can video it (I have a Cayman S tip) for about 10 days from the 22nd) I will but I recommend trying it for all you tiptronic owners.

Incidentally, my buddy when changing up lets his foot of the loud pedal for an instant, makes the up change and then hammers it again, the change feels very fast - faster than a manual - honestly.

    > faster than a manual - honestly

Of course it does. The tip S is a very good transmission. When PROPERLY used in manual mode it is fast and precise. There is no way a standard stick manual shift can be made faster - and this comes from a stick driver.

I emphasized the word PROPERLY above because proper use also requires practice.

    Re: Tiptronic Blipping!

If I recall correctly, new Tiptronic (2005-) is now outsourced to Mercedes Benz.

    Re: Tiptronic Blipping!

yes, the Tiptronic S works really well, with sport mode the shifting just feels very precise and dynamic...

the first month when i got my car, i didnt find it exciting.. until get a hand on how the tiptronic system works which is really fun like a manaul.. except i wish there is a 6th gear

    Re: Tiptronic Blipping!

I decided to go for manual again, because I think the Tiptronic S is overaged. The missing 6th gear is fatal IMO

Why? is a 6th cog needed? something missing? does it add anything performance-wise? or is it just because more cogs is better?

BTW... all die-hard 6-speed stick 911 drivers I know, rarely use the 6th gear. Some even say that PAG put a 6th gear there strictly for marketing reasons (you know... certain customers think more is better). PAG strayed there from form fits function, the same way Mercedes and Lexus is going these days...

    Re: Tiptronic Blipping!

BTW, I did once get training from a PAG from Weissach in a manual car (think thats how you spell it) I told him that I owned a tip (at the time) and he told me the following:

    1. Most of the PAG guys in Germany who are lucky enough to get a company car choose manual - probably 80%.

    2. There are hardly ANY manual Cayennes sold in the world - maybe 10 - 15% only of the V6.

    3. There are certain countries (think Thailand was one of them) where they only sell tips. Manual is an option that takes longer to make delivery of the car - think he also said some of the midddle eastern countries were the same too.

    4. Never use the Tiptronic in auto mode in stop start city driving - it lugs the engine, doesn't give you enough torgue and the car drinks too much juice.

Nothing we all don't probably know already. I am going to borrow a friends 997 Tip next week to get a better idea - the 987 S was great, I hope the 997 is better!

Auto mode works fine and does not lug the engine and economy is actually optimized IF you drive it properly, i.e., do not try to drive it spiritedly. Horses for courses.

I think you got it! Try the 997 and report back.

How can you drive an automatic transmission like a manual?

Sorry not a very clear comment, you can drive more "like" a manual by using the buttons to upchange and down change rather than let the car do it for you. The other thing is, a manual will put you in 4th gear at 40 mph. In a manual transmissioned car you would probably change up at 3,000 rpm or so and keep the car above 2,000 all the time otherwise it lugs. There have been lots of arguments on this and some have said you can even drive the car at any rpm range and it will be fine - thats up to them of course but they will not be in the optimum rev range at all.

    Re: Tiptronic Blipping!

Is this thread an illusion? I cannot believe the things you guys are saying about how good the tiptronic transmission is as an TipS 4S owner.

So... as a "TipS 4S owner" you disagree? Perhaps you do not understand how a modern tip should be driven. And this comes from a manual 6sp driver myself.

    Tip is awful!

I'ts an abomination. Slow witted in automatic and frankly just slow in manual. The 6 gears in the manual are closer stacked so keep the engine "on cam" much better. I briefly had a Tip a few years ago for "domestic" reasons. It was truly one of the worst decisions I've ever made. Don't be fooled into doing it: unless you have a disability that prevents you from driving stick, then avoid it at all costs. It ruins a great car and makes it at best average.

    Re: Tip is awful!

Just for the record, I would never buy a tip again, as I said at the outset of the topic, I bought a tip a few years ago and promptly sold it after a year or so of ownership. HOWEVER, if I am honest I don't think I was driving it as well as it could have been driven. I also watched a video of a the PDE (USA) where an instructor uses a tip, I think it was Hurley himself and he actually said for the average dude the tip is gonna be better around a track. I don't agree myself but I think there is probably more to the tip than what I PERSONALLY gave it credit for.

On that note, I have only ever owned two automatic cars in my life and consider myself a pretty good manual driver - the Weissach instructor who spent three hours with me even said so - if I told you what he really said, I would get a whole bunch of comments saying "yeah, yeah prove it" so i won't.

All I am saying is, the tip is not AS bad as what I thought it was AND it can do a few more tricks than what I thought. HOWEVER, it is still as slow as hell changing down and not the smartest of auto's in the full auto mode.

Le Chef, did you have a 997 with the auto? Or like me had an older 996 car?

    Re: Tip is awful!

have you tried a 997/997S tip with sport chrono package??

No way--you will get better fuel economy in auto mode, especially in stop and start city driving. At least in my experience (from owning 6 different Tiptronic Porsche from MY 99 through 06).

Well coming from an SMG M3 I find it very annoying and disconneceted. We have no speed limits her so she is often driven above 200 km/h range. It just sucks. Sorry.

My right foot is heavy(some may call reckless I do not give a [beep]. I enjoy my car) and often brake and accelerate and modulate gas to do in and out of trafic. tip gets confused and it strugles. In manual mode it is a disaster.

Whatever you guys say it is not a modern transmission. I made an expensive mistake and will change as soon as I can.

I imagine owning a Porsche in USA, you will not understand my point of view. Even if you track your car it is a different style than everyday driving. You know when you are going to brake and accelerate and you will still have no idea what I am talking about.

    Re: Tiptronic Blipping!

Q, I believe I can understand your view. I see it as power driving. The tiptronic shows a delay in response when making a quick break and accelerate manuver. Also, the response in turning and accelerating is rough on the transmission.

    Re: Tiptronic Blipping!

No amount of Tiptronic improvement could drag me away from the satisfaction and involvement of my clutch pedal...

    Yes

Yes. It was awful. Better, but not good enough to make the car satisfying to drive.

Thanks Porky, you're absolutey right! The throttle response is much better just in first gear alone.

Putting the gear shift in Manual makes the car more responsive compared to Auto, very noticable between idle and 3000 rpm.

How do they go faster than 120mph???

With regards to the tiptronic, there are some good auto boxes out there, but the Porsche one is not. I've had problems with my C2S manual and was given a tip 997 for a period as a loaner. I drove it soft, hard, slow, fast and everything in between; the manual is definitely better.

The only reason I'd ever get a tip is if my sports injuries catch up with me and I have a dodgy knee come old age.
