    Scratches?

Anyone notice that 997s, especially dark colors scratch rather easily? For some reason can't find as many scratches on my S Class - and i drive that more often. Can't stop finding small scratches. Guess i should live with wear and tear. Any thoughts?

    Re: Scratches?

You probably look at your 997 more closely... and don't care so much about the S class

    Re: Scratches?

you sure they are scratches from driving and not scratches (swirl marks) from washing?

    Re: Scratches?

It is from washing and anytime you touch the car with pretty much anything. It's unavoidable unless you want to drive yourself nuts using swirl remover all the time. I think that I recall some threads stating that the clear coat isn't very hard and that's what you're noticing.

    Re: Scratches?

Guess i should just forget about it. Also noticed a small scratch on the rear headlamp. Pretty sure its from washing and proper detailing can get rid of it. Thanks anyways.

    Re: Scratches?

It is from the way you wash it. Wash it poorly and you will get scratches.

    Re: Scratches?

Yep, the clear coats are rather soft and your Merc probably has the ceramiclear paint on it. As noted already, how you was the car may well be the culprit.

    Re: Scratches?

    Yes - uzj100 has right.

Mercedes is using since approx. 2 1/2 years a ceramiclear paint which makes the paint very very hard.

Regarding the Porsche. Polish it, put Nano Sealing or Liquid Glass on top and use only textil car wash (not sure if you have them in the US?). Made the same on my Bimmer and after 1 1/2 year not any scratch on a black car!

    cheers, L@rs

    Re: Scratches?

My black car is very scratched up, despite careful washing. I love the way it looks , but NEVER a black Porsche again. I had a black Audi S3 and it was not nearly as sensitive.

    Re: Scratches?

Black is worth the work.... And realize this: The easier a surface is to scratch, the easier it is to polish-out. That's my gripe with some of these rock-hard modern finishes. They are super resistant to scratches, yes... but when you DO get some scratches, they are a BITCH to deal with, as the hard paint simply laughs at low-to-medium cut polishes...

I detailed my pops's XLR a few weeks ago as a b'day present, and practically had to block-sand the damn thing to get some dealer-inflicted scratches out of the hood and deck... It flat wore me out..

    Re: Scratches?

FWIW, I use Optimum No Rinse wash and a sheepskin mitt. Waffle weave microfiber towels to dry. I polish about every 6 months, because no matter how careful you are some micromarring--"spider webbing" is bound to occur. For polishing I like Menzerna, either 106 FF (replaced with 106FA I believe) or the 85RD.

You might want to adopt a 5ft attitude. Look at it from 5ft away. Learn to accept some minor spider webs or marring and keep it as clean as you can, but don't drive yourself too nuts over it.

As 69 B 9 says, black is worth it

    Re: Scratches?

Does scratches only appears on black and not the basalt black?

    Re: Scratches?

Black is worst but I love it. I use the spot free rinse at the car wash and the old high speed blow dry followed by drying the door jambs w/ 100% cotton. Total cost $3. Time spent 10 minutes every two weeks. Exterior of car is not touched by human hands.
Have a pro detail it once or twice a year to keep it protected $200+ - not the corner carwash wax job.

    Re: Scratches?

If you are going to show a black car, we need a shot of the sun shining directly on it into the camera. Something like this but unfortunately, it was a cloudy day:

    Re: Scratches?

With a Brinkmann Dual Xenon lamp, it will show surface defects:

This is exactly my point. A car is supposed to be driven hard. I don't want a museum object that you can't touch. I guess the conclusion is, which many have already pointed out, if you love detailing and you are never clumsy, like I am, black is great. For the rest of us it's simply not very convenient.

All I meant was that I don't scratch the car by hand drying it. I try to not touch it if I can help it. The comment was only in context of washing the car. Once a year detailing to protect a car being used 20K + per year is not excessive.

My car is not a museum piece. I drive it hard 365 days/yr, rain, snow or shine. I have not heard of a 997 on this board with more miles.

    Re: Scratches?

I was not implying you don't use your car the way it's supposed to. I am simply saying black is too much work for me. I just don't like having to be that careful. I still love the car, but given the choice again it would not be black.
