GT3 Break In & Oil Consumption

I know there is lots of stuff that has been posted about break in etc. I have completed 500 miles in the GT3 and used up a litre of oil so far, not concerned as readig through previous posts it seems thats not too bad during break in.The point I have not seen made before is my rear number plate ( licence plate to our american friends ) is covered in black soot. Obivously on the GT3 the exhausts are central so the emmissions are coming out over the plate as opposed to on a std carrera where the exhasuts are no where near the no plate...anyone else noticed this?

AFAIK, excess soot in the exhaust tailpipes CAN be an early sign of engine problems. As a precaution, it seems sensible to consult your dealer. FWIW my car has consumed 700mL of engine oil in 5150 miles of driving so your engine oil consumption seems a little high to me...BUT it might be the case that the GT3 engine consumes more oil than the C2S...best and safest to get it checked out.

Cheers Easy Rider...I am going to crack on upto 1000 miles then I will get the dealer to do an oil/filter change, I know you dont have to, but I always think it is worthwhile after the initial break in, and see what they think to the soot etc when they do that.

No problem. I should add that the exhaust tailpipes on the Boxster are also in the centre part of the rear bumper so what you've described doesn't really sound to me like it's normal. Soot shouldn't form on the bodywork of the car IMHO ordinarily....just my 2 pence worth...

Ive done 450 miles in my 997 GT3 and havent used a drop of oil yet,so this doesnt sound right to me

I actually used more oil running in my 997 C2S.
Also havent really noticed the soot issue on number plate either

Here's a pic, I wish I knew who the owner was. He's got some soot back there. Even though someone at Porsche most definitely can tell you want's going on, they will keep their mouth's shut. (I speak from experience: my sooty exhausts). Most likely the dealer wil probably tell you to hold off any worry for another few thousand miles; see if the problem subsides with break in.

Aw cr*p this is not a 997. Will post anyway... .

The other thing? Maybe try eventually using the 5w oil that's approved and not the 0w. I heard that 5w burns less.

i have 1800 miles on my 997 GT3 - checked oil this morning was down one bar (or 1/5 of a qt) - called the dealer he said no problem at all, would be worse to try and add 1/5 a qt and over fill. My car is white so i see the black soot all the time. No concern according to my dealer and normal run in.
