    Another engine caught fire

This 599 from a swiss owner went up in flames by unknown cause,
they waited at a traffic light in the netherlands when they saw the flames coming from under the bonnet.

I know I've seen more pictures of 599 ending like this....

    Re: Another engine caught fire

    Surprise, surprise..

    Re: Another engine caught fire

Sheesh. When's this going to stop?

    Re: Another engine caught fire

That is the 4th one I've seen from pictures burst into flames since January!!

Is it because of the world climate getting warmer and warmer?

    Re: Another engine caught fire

It's just tragic seeing Ferraris going up in smoke like this. Hope they build future models better...

nberry loves praising Ferrari's slow depreciation rates. I wonder how much a barbecued Ferrari is worth?

    Re: Another engine caught fire

I guess Ferrari shouldn't make the Fire Extinguisher optional!

The non-barbecued Ferrari are worth that much, since so many others get barbecued...

Ouch! You'd think they would have figured out by now what is causing these fires. I know I'd be very mad if my 250.000 EUR sports car caught fire all by itself .

No wonder Ferrari has these long order backlogs. Before serving new customers they need to replace all those 599 destroyed by fire

Yep, exactly, it all fits together.

I am sure Porsche will adopt this "more sales by engine fires" concept very soon. Might help stabalizing 997TT sales

    Re: Another engine caught fire

Well guys, at least you know that if you get stranded on the side of the road, you will be warm .

    Re: Another engine caught fire

IMO F are deliberately pretending this problem doesn't exist. If they acknowledge it and do something about it it opens them up to costly law suits. How many more people will either die or be severely burned before they do something about it?

    Re: 599 GTB Ferrocaldo

A credible source tells me this is a spy photo of the terribly exclusive Ferrari 60th anniversary model -- 599 GTB Ferrocaldo -- Italian for "hot iron." Each car is lovingly hand-crafted and presented to its blushing new owner along with an exclusive, autographed book by Jean and Luca entitled "Bellissima Campfire Recipes." To minimize cook time, every recipe begins with the instruction to turn the manettino dial one notch past CST Off to F599 Off -- also known as F Off to chief test driver, Dario -- before exiting the car and assembling the grill and extra long tongs stored in the spacious boot. Tailored grill and tong holder is an optional extra.

    Cin cin!

    Re: Another engine caught fire

599 is getting a hell of rep

    Re: Another engine caught fire

The news spreads quickly... It looked very sad.

    Re: Another engine caught fire

Maybe they should stop using fuel/oil lines and clamps from the corporate FIAT parts warehouse and a good reason never to own a 2 door /4 seater Ferrari ( 612 ) except to carry luggage back there .

    Re: Another engine caught fire

Nick has a golden opportunity to establish his objectivity!

But wait, he can't the P out of his mouth.

    Re: Another engine caught fire

when this new phenomenon is going to end ??on supercars they should put auto fire extinguishers under the engine bonnet ,like the one we find in houses and warehouses..

    Nick can't respond right now.

He's out shopping for a fire extinguisher.

    Re: Another engine caught fire

Does anyone know the reasons for all the 599 catching fire? We have seen a few Gallardo doing the same thing, and appears to be a reason. What's Ferrari's excuse? I am planning to get the "Dino" when (not if!) it happens, but maybe I should just stick to Porsches!

Forget the extinguisher. Tell him to assemble an emergency picnic basket including some good cigars and cognac. If the car wants to smoke, why shouldn't the passengers?

Nah, just drive it on scenic mountain roads all the time. That way, when push comes to shove, you can just dump it off a cliff.
It makes for a much better story to say: "My Ferrari? Ah, I didn't like it, so I rolled it off a cliff," as opposed to "The damn thing caught fire on the motorway and I was stuck there for two hours."

    Re: Another engine caught fire

I asked a knowledgeable F mechanic why this happens. He says it's the cats that get extremely hot and cause the fires. One of the sacrifices for a high performance engine. There are ways to cool the cats but it's expensive. He suggested the use of platinum material as a coolant. When you see these cars really blow it's usually the fuel fumes that get ignited and explode. The cats are typically below the engine which is also a problem.(more stuff to ignite) With P's the cats are off to each side. On Mercedes they've got several coolers for the cats. So, this problem is something all manufacturers face but others just have better designs to handle the high heat. Sound like not until there is some design changes it's, "burn baby burn."

PS - I don't really think that a fire extinguisher is much of a solution because you're not going to want your car smelling like an old toaster for ever even if you do manage to put one out. Probably best to just let her burn.

I don't think Nick cares. As long as Ferrari keeps their volume low enough that they can produce cars that catch fire AND sell for over MSRP Nick will be happy.

Last year on the summer there was a Porsche Turbo that burned on the highway hear in Zurich...
