    Porsche 996 Turbo S...Info + Media Pics!!

Stuttgart. Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, Stuttgart, is extending its product range to include the 911 Turbo S. The new model will be available at Porsche dealers around the globe from August 2004, as a coupé and as a convertible. At 5,700 revolutions per minute, it has an output of 331 kW (450 PS). This is 30 PS more than the output of the 911 Turbo. The basic price is EUR 122,500 for the Turbo S Coupé or EUR 131,100 for the Turbo S Convertible. In Germany, the coupé will be available at a price of EUR 142,248 (including VAT and country-specific requirements). The convertible will cost EUR 152,224.

Thanks to the use of larger turbochargers and a further improved intercooler, as well as a revision of the engine electronics, the Porsche 911 Turbo S realises torque of a handsome 620 Newton metres, which is available between 3,500 and 4,500 revolutions. It reaches its maximum speed at 307 km/h. The Turbo S with manual transmission (coupé) sprints from zero to 200 km/h in 13.6 seconds. This is another 0.8 seconds faster than the 911 Turbo.

Another characteristic of the Turbo S is the standard Porsche Ceramic Composite Brake (PCCB). It sports punched and internally ventilated ceramic brake discs with a diameter of 350 millimetres at the front and back (911 Turbo: 330 millimetre steel brake discs with a diameter of 350 millimetres front and back) and six-piston monobloc fixed callipers at the front (911 Turbo: four-piston).

In addition to the Turbo S logo on the boot lid and on door mouldings and centre console, this vehicle can be identified by its 18-inch wheels in "GT silver metallic". The hubcaps sport a coloured Porsche crest. The extended standard features include cruise control, a six CD changer system and the green tinted band at the top of the windscreen. For this new model the special colour, dark olive metallic, can be ordered at no extra charge.

When looking at the dashboard, the driver's eye immediately notices not only the aluminium-coloured dial faces but also the "Turbo S" logo on the rev counter. If buyers decide in favour of natural leather, this material is specially embossed on the middle strips of the seats, the steering wheel rim (where it is handled), the shift lever and the hand brake lever.

Guys you have no idea how much I love the 996 Turbo!!!

Re: Porsche 996 Turbo S...Info + Media Pics!!

so the wheels, logo, and PCCB (not really) - are the only ways to tell from the exterior? - and the additional S on the instrument panel?

    thats pathetic.

Re: Porsche 996 Turbo S...Info + Media Pics!!

The green tint across the top of the windshield and the 6-piston calipers also give it away.
But why is that so pathetic? The Turbo with the X50 has NO external markings to set it apart from a "normal" Turbo. If somebody looks at your car and can tell what it is with such minor cosmetics, they are somebody that appreciates what they see. I'd rather deal with somebody else that enjoys these cars as much as I do, instead of somebody sees just another Porsche. Only my opinion.

    ...actually it is sad

Porsche seems to be trying too hard to liquidate their current inventory of cars with weak gimmicks. I like the Porsche that made superior performance vehicles not this current one that is into selling the same cars with different badgings.

I realize that Porsche like all other automotive manufacturers is in the business of making money. However, even GM has the common sense not to rebadge every Corvette just because of a few options. The idea is that you can only get those specifications on a car by buying that exact model.

So do current owners of TT X50s w/PCCB own a Turbo S? No? Oh right I forgot they didn't opt for the green window tint.

    Re: ...actually it is sad

the real problem is that everything in this new Turbo 'S' already existed or was availible.

    its a marketing glitch.

the X50 turbo should have been called the Turbo S in the first place

the carrera with x51 should have been called the carrera S in the first place.

with the 997 the marketing guys finally got it right, and now, with the Turbo powerkit, they got that straight too.

in the end, its a timeline issue, X50 turbos should have been called S in the first place.

the reason it is 'pathetic' is that porsche didn't even bother to differentiate these models with anything other than highly minor aesthetic differences,

they didn't even make the effort to cajole 8-10 more HP from the car, ie. the ALSO pathetic difference between pre facelift boxsters, facelift boxsters, and special edition boxsters...

leftover parts bin raid anyone? hell, they even found a way to get rid of extra paint, on the wheels,

note 550 SE wheels in seal grey, turbo S in that special silver from the CGT...

    sigh.

I agree with X50 and Turbo S and all, but the 997 Carrera S has an entirly new developed 3.8 engine that is not based on M96. So in this case for sure they didn't put the X51 package on a based Carrera and called it Carrera S.

Nevertheless, Porsche has pulled some stunts regarding their Carrera 40 anniversary, Boxster 550 edition, and the Turbo S . Left over inventory has to move somehow .

    yes i know

i was referring to the 996 generation carreras. indeed there is a bigger differentiation in the 997, justifiying the S badging and marketing differentiation even MORE

    Re: ...actually it is sad

gay i hope thats not really going to happen

Upgrade your turbo now, for a mere $20.....

Sorry, but already getting calls for this item (we stock them) to add to your turbo logo. Can't believe it. But if you add this, remember the logo will be slightly off center unless you replace the turbo logo as well.

Just a heads up, in case any wannabees 'wanna be'....

Re: Upgrade your turbo now, for a mere $20.....

    Eric,

Do you happen to have letter "R" too? For those who have Sports suspentions, they wanna call it "Turbo RS"

What? The 997 S still has the M96 engine--no different from when the 996 got the bump from 3.4 to 3.6 liters.

    Re: ...actually it is sad

Well, I was waiting for this car for a long time as the rumors of an S kept slipping out. But I am going to pass on this S. I'll wait until the soul crushing depreciation has set in and pick one up for one third of the new car sales price. Pretty disapointing in my view

    Re: ...actually it is sad

so the people that currently own 996 Turbos are going to lose money on the resale value??? If anyone wants to give away a 996 Turbo I'm always here

    Re: ...actually it is sad

I have precisely the car you describe. This is a pure marketing play by Porsche to fool people in to spend money on a 996 whilst (like me) waiting for their 997 Turbo. More money out of the door and a double hit on depreciation - No Thanks

    Re: ...actually it is sad

in retrospect, this is probably what they should have done with powerkit turbos to begin with

the only reason they are doing this now is with the success of the boxster/boxster S line and the clear differntiation that has caused in the marketplace

they see the value a $5 'S' on the back can generate, and will likely brand all 'powerkit (x51/x50) models with an S in the future.

this is good. but it also means that the 997 generation may well end up with more variants than the 996 generation, nearly double!
