    997: Will there be a Turbo S?

    I just put deposits down on a 997 Turbo and 997 Turbo Cab, but the question I've been pondering is: will there be a 997 Turbo S?

    RC, any info?

    Did you see a Turbo S from the 996 series yet?

    I don't think we'll see a 997 Turbo S too soon but you never know what Porsche has on their mind.
    I expect a 996 Turbo S any time soon because there have been lots of rumors about it in the past but regarding a 997 Turbo S, I have really to say: I do not know.

    Re: 997: Will there be a Turbo S?

    Wow, that would be a car I would buy now! A 996 Turbo S would be REALLY sweet!!! Pushing $150K, though???

    Re: 997: Will there be a Turbo S?

    I don't see the need for a 996 Turbo S this late in the game when they have the X-50. I think Porsche needs to concentrate on the future models.

    Re: 997: Will there be a Turbo S?

    My guess is "yes there will be a Turbo S".

    Here's why (with respect to power, weight):

    996 -> 997 (yawn)
    996 -> 997 S (ok)

    996 Turbo -> 997 Turbo (yawn)
    996 Turbo -> 997 Turbo S (ok)

    It seems obvious that the 996->997 power story required an S model to keep the story somewhat righteous.

    Extrapolate to Turbo. Lather, rinse, repeat.

    Re: 997: Will there be a Turbo S?

    More confusing would be when the introduce the C4.

    Now it would be of course standard body:

    Carrera 4
    Carrera 4S (more horsepower)

    What would they call C4 widebody?

    Carrera 4SS

    Re: 997: Will there be a Turbo S?

    Afaik there won't be a C4 model, nor will there be a Targa.

    Re: 997: Will there be a Turbo S?

    I would not buy a 996 Turbo S, as I am extremely satisfied with the style and performance of my current 2001TT. I am already intrigued by the idea of a 997 TT, however, and will most likely upgrade in 2006. I looked long and hard at a 993TT, but waited for the 996 TT, which I think is a major improvement. I have little doubt that the 997TT will be a similar improvement over my current car.

    I do hope the 997TT will have better wheel well (hips) integration than the current 997 and 997S, as pictured at least. I like the overall new design improvements of the 997, but the hips seem to bulge out, as opposed to flowing more aesthetically from the door side panels. I think the current 996TT handles the hip design well.

    I'm quit convinced that there will be a Targa again. As the complete top is identic to the 996, its easy for Porsche to put the Targa top to a 997. So why shoudn't they put this on the steet again?

    There are a couple of reasons that Porsche probably won't offer a 997 Targa:

    1) The 996 Targa hasn't been a great sales success and the numbers are dropping. In the first 4 months of 2004 only 49 were sold in the US compared to 167 for the same period in 2003.

    2) The sliding glass roof is nice if you can't decide between a coupe and a convertible but it generates a large number of customer complaints. Ask a dealer to see how many service bulletins have been released regarding the 993 & 996 Targas.

    Those two points would account for the following line in the recent AutoWeek 997 article: "Targa will be phased out due to slow sales and production complexity"

    Re: 997: Will there be a Turbo S?

    Just saw that Porsche announced the Turbo S coupe and
    cabriolet. They will be 2005 models available in late August for the US market. 444 hp 457 ft lb torque $131,400 US coupe $141,200 Cabriolet. Just squeezing every last sale out of the 996 body. Good luck to them, I just would not buy an old body style when the new one is out. The people that buy this will take a serious hit on resale. The HP is the close to the X50.

    not necessarily...

    for example, the 993 Turbo S is a great example, low mileage (and i mean under 500) ones from the 97~ model year are commanding original MSRP these days.

    and body styles are completely subjective, if one prefers the 996 turbo style over the new 997s, then it is hardly a bad decision, especially considering that there will be another 2-3 years before we see a widebody (mabye?) -turbo 997.

    There is the official german announcment:

    911 Turbo S mit noch mehr Leistung

    Stuttgart. Die Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, Stuttgart, erweitert ihre Produktpalette um den 911 Turbo S. Das neue Modell sird weltweit angeboten und ist als Coupé und Cabriolet ab August 2004 verfügbar. Es leistet 331 kW (450 PS) bei 5.700 Umdrehungen pro Minute, also 30 PS mehr als der 911 Turbo. Der Grundpreis beträgt 122.500 Euro für das Turbo S Coupé beziehungsweise 131.100 Euro für das Turbo S Cabriolet.

    This is part of the strategy which Porsche plays not to influence the used-car prices to much, with introducing a new car. They think, when they can keep going to hold the 996 actual, than the prices will not shrink that much. Further on, as they do not have a 997 Turbo yet, they can increase demand of the Turbos by shipping out a Turbo S. Very very weired!

    Re: 997: Will there be a Turbo S?

    I actually appreciate Porsche's strategic decision regarding the turboS.

    I just bought an X50/X73 equipped turbo 12 months ago and would surely not have been pleased by now learning that the turboS carries some additional hp...

    Plus, I am sure that I am not the only Porsche customer feeling like that

    I think that the turboS is a great package for that price. What I cannot understand, however, is that they did not include the X73 setup.

    MKSGR,
    X73 option is what I was exactly thinking about regarding the Turbo S, X73 would have complete the whole package.

    You should start to trust us...
    I had the info for a while but have been asked to refrain from posting until the official word is out. Unfortunately I was on a trip yesterday and today and I couldn't post the infos/pictures. But our User(s) already did a good job, it is great how "dynamic" this site has become. We can't keep up with our Users, great sign...I really like it.
