BMW bashing is getting a bit OLD!
Guys, hate to tell you this---- as boring as the current 3 series coupe and sedan look--- they still look better than the NEW MB C class coming out with it's SQUARE headlights, and the it is better than the A4. You must be kidding me in regard to all of the crap you guys are saying.
One--- compare the current 3 series sedan to the A4-- which would you have? An A4 which looks like the OLD A6 but shorter and a bit more bulbous or the soon to come C Class with what we know will be a myriad of technical issues and it's questionable styling? That's what runs in this luxury class--- not a Porsche or a Corvette.
Let's jump forward to the perfomance classes in this area. The S4--- WHAT THE M3 competes against--- not the 76k MSRP RS4 which looks like CRAP here in the states. (in the states we don't get the sporty steering wheel or the racing seats---- we get S4 seats and the normal A4 wheels with RS4 tagged on it). Sorry, for over 70k... the AUDI RS4 is not a deal, nor is the interior up to snuff with ANYTHING that is in the price range. The car is a big joke in the US.
Mercedes AMG- The new Merc isn't even out yet here in the states-- but I assume the way that Mercedes releases it's AMG cars (same time as the normal cars)--- the AMG stats on the eventual C63 or C55 will be out. Again-- nice... but it won't be able to take a turn, it won't be manual, and it will most likely break down after 10k miles. Additionally- I don't like the looks of it.
Everyone that is complaining about the M3- WAIT until it is out or someone reviews it. Everyone said the same thing about the Chevy Corvette (even though that does look boring) it drives better than a ferrari 360 and the Chevy Z06 is better handling and quicker than an F430 and is up there in regards to performance with a Lambo Gallardo.
Things I don't like about the car- The windows... WTF?! the front is fine, the carbon fiber plastic roof--- that's cool. THE REAR of the car (the diffuser) is confusing the hell out of me. I don't get the rear diffusers that the M5 and M6 and Z4 have. Does it do anything!?

Unfortunately for us, Rossi, the car industrys big producers will not tailor their high end models to the afficianados. I believe that we are holding an ever dwindling market share. Instead, the lay driver looking for status and "available performance" (i.e. straight line shooting) is holding the torch.
Weight increase is a result of this, as well as increased safety demands. Controlling a 1000kg car with 420hp is no easy task, and knowing the M3 market here in the US, there would be a lot of bodybags
For lower weight, the avid sporting fan has to look to kit cars and small manufacturers (Lotus, Noble etc...)

ps this new M3 is quite ugly and shares increasingly little lineage with the revered father the e30, the beefy uncle the 36 and the complacent yet talented son, the e46.
I believe this itteration is the steroid pumping son in high school who is spiraling out of control

BMW bosses went chicken on their bill-paying bread and butter 3 series to satisfy those still living in the mid 90s and we get this as a result.

The idea of buying a speed limited car is revolting. Worse is to know that you could have bought it delimited!
As for the new M3's looks, if you debadge it including the BMW roundels, most people could never identifiy it. Thats a positive for some occaisions.

BTW, did you ever had a chance to drive RS4?
RS4 V8 is very picky unit and it is not feeling very powerfull at low revs IMO. And what about oil consumption on this engine? It is pretty high-just ask some RS4 owners... Specially in first 10000km's... My friend own one and likes it a lot, but oil consumption and oil operating temperature... Better not to talk about it...
Just a clue for you-after only two laps at Grobnik race track in Croatia RS4 oil temperature was at 125C!! How much will that engine last I asked myself... And I am Audi fan!
Spirited drive on the autobahn... 115C oil temperature...
Ask any 997 turbo owner about oil temperature...

How much did the E46 M3 weight? Google tells me between 1550kg to 1570kg... So if this new M3 is only a bit more weight but much more power, in theory it should perform better than the E46 (other factors aside).
The 335 looks pretty good in the flesh so I guess the M3 will too... The car should be photogenic too though - shame really.
Either way, I'd rather have a slightly used 997S over this anyday!

Yes I have driven the RS4, and it is a peaky engine. And that is my point really, the M3 will be even worse with more kilograms to push per NM. In gear acceleration will also suffer. Having said that, I am sure the M3 will be a faster car than the RS4 on the track given its much newer chassis. As someone else said, it will have no real competitor until the RS5 comes out in 2 years.
