What are interesting destinations in Germany?

Picking up my RS next week in Stuggartt. What interesting places are there to visit in germany? Doing a quick loop down to lugano than monaco, then swing back up into germany to the nurburing. Heard there is a mercedes and bmw museum.

Would appreciate some recommendations for an itineary. Have about 4 days to roam around in germany.

I would go straight down to Fussen to Neuschwanstein, then towards Austria for a fill up of gas (cheaper than Germany) and then on toward Garmisch (overnight) and then follow the Alpenstraae to Berchesgaden. You can then run over to Salzburg (overnight) and then down the autobahn south to Gmund (Austria) and then cross over south of there to San Moritz.

Mercedes museum was worth the visit, if thats your sort of thing then http://www.technik-museum.de/uk/ might be also ...

Re: What are interesting destinations in Germany?

How much time do you have and what are your interests ?

There is a road called "Die Romantische Strasse " sp? ( the romantic road )which goes thru some very scenic and historical medieval towns in Southern Germany .

If your time is limited, I suggest South to Munich (stay overnight and have a couple of beers Lol )
I recommend "Die vier Jahreszeiten" sp? ( The Four Seasons hotel )
From there , South to Fuessen ( Neuschwanstein castle )
Btw: if time permits, take some Country roads . Porsche's were not just made for the Autobahn you know. They have some roads down there as smooth as Billiard tables and some even have BANKED curves (God I miss real driving )

Anyway, continue South into Austria . Take the Lech Valley up thru Zuers ,Lech and St. Anton (I do a lot of Skiing there ) If you want to stay in Lech, stay at the Angela or Jagdhaus Monzabohn .

Or, go from Munich to Salzburg and from there thru Innsbruck , St. Anton into Switzerland .
I think Salzburg is definitely worth a detour if you have the time (try dinner in the Peterskeller restaurant)
From St.Anton you can take the Autobahn into Switzerland and from there go South to Milano , Genoa and on to the French Riviera (Monaco, Cannes, St.Tropez etc. )

Then head north to Paris .Stay a couple of days (if you get bored in Paris , there is no help for you )
I'm not mentioning any Restaurants in France, because there is no need (even highway rest stops are Gourmet Lol)

From there , if you like History , go up to Aachen in Germany (Charlemagne's tomb is there .The "Cathedral"was 500 years old when he was buried ,and over 1000 years old when Columbus set sail )
Then down the Mosel River to the Nuerburgring .

Finally ,go down the Rhine valley a ways , on your way back to Stuttgart . It's a very scenic drive thru quaint little towns (wine country) and a Fortress on every hill top .

Another option is to go from Paris to Geneva ,Basel and down the Rhine river valley to "THE 'RING "

Have a great, safe trip .

Depending on the time you have, you may want to visit Rotenburg, in the northwest section of the state of Bavaria. It was the seat of Frederick the Great and has a wall, rebuilt, surrounding the main part of the city. It's a wonderful tourist attraction with museums and other great sites to see. I haven't been there in recent years (saw it in 1986), but it was terrific.

Picking up the RS with six other lucky new RS owners. Heading straight down with one overnite stop in lugano, then one nite in monaco. Then I'm free to head back up into germany for about 4 days.

Like to hit the nurburing and stay in southern part of germany or switzerland. Austria sounds interesting.

Thanks for info guys, especially JCS for the detail recommendation.

Re: What are interesting destinations in Germany?

In addition to Rotenburg, you might try Heidelberg, as well. And if you're going north and east -- Wolfsburg (VW factory) and Leipzig (Porsche Cayenne and Carrera GT factory).

Re: What are interesting destinations in Germany?

That's a good point. You might find the former east Germany more interesting as it is still recovering from years of neglect when Soviet held. It's catching up, but there are sights there you will not see in modern western Germany.

The Black Forrest is also quite nice.

Some other great stops include "The Eagle's Nest" in Berchesgarten (aka the Kelbsteinhaus) and the Zugspitz (mountain) near Garmisch. All roads are nicely maintained, for the most part.

Re: What are interesting destinations in Germany?

All of the above recommendations are good, but if you only have 4 days you won't have time to see or do much more than drive. For example, if you were to visit Rothenburg ob der Tauber, you would want at least a couple of hours to tour the Kriminal Museum, and then do a short walk through the town. If you were to visit Neuschwanstein, Mad King Ludwig's castle, you would need about 3 hours for a proper tour. There are actually 2 castles to tour there. Remember to pick up permits in both Austria and Switzerland to drive on their "autobahns". If you stay off the main highways you don't need them. They can be purchased at the borders. Sounds like a pretty ambitious trip to go from Monaco to the 'Ring in 4 days. I assume you have to drop off your car somewhere for the shipment back to Hong Kong.
