Australia practice: Massa on top as Lewis shines

Forza Ferrari! But an impressive showing by Hamilton. But a race is a whole different ballgame than practice...

    Quote:
Ferrari confirmed it's pre-race status as favourites when Felipe Massa and Kimi Raikkonen ended Friday's free practice for the Australian Grand Prix first and second fastest.

The Brazilian was in control for much of the second session, as first Fernando Alonso, then Nick Heidfeld and finally Lewis Hamilton all tried and failed to break the Ferrari man's grasp on the session.

But the British rookie Hamilton did however end the his first day as a grand prix driver, third overall and best of the rest - four places ahead of his double-world champion team-mate Alonso.

Re: Australia practice: Massa on top as Lewis shines

Very interesting... Only practice as you point out but we get a good feel for the cars as they each teams performance is very similar for both cars.

Looking forward to seeing Hamilton race... As long as he does not stuff it in the first few laps and the McLaren goes the distance I expect him to be picking up a fair few points on Sunday!!!!

Suprised at how poor the Honda's have performed and even more surprised that their B team beat them!!!! Not good!

    Cant wait!

Re: Australia practice: Massa on top as Lewis shines

I watched. Hamilton was very impressive. I liked the appearance of the spyker car, the honda world car, toro rosso, and surprisingly the renault paint scheme.

With tires out of the way we may get good racing. I don't like the talk of teams not being constructors anymore though.

Re: Australia practice: Massa on top as Lewis shines

Practice lap times are completrely insignificant, they are testing chasis & aerodinamic setups, tires, fuel loads, and all with a dose of couter-intelligence so as not to show any cards to the other teams before qualifying.

We will know more after tfinal qualifying, then we can know more about the "pace" given that we have a hint of each's fuel load.

Re: Australia practice: Massa on top as Lewis shines

I couldn't make it today, but it was loud and clear whenever they were on the track. Here is a pic from my office. The track is around the lake on the top left side of the photo. This was taken this morning during the session, and as you can see it was gloomy and a bit wet. I am going to have a great weekend being there!

Thats a great photo WAY, thanks

    I don't quite agree.
One of the changes for this season is that the two race pr engine rule applies from saturday. So friday is more like a test session and they can use as many engines as they like during friday. So there's no need to "save" the car on fridays anymore.

Another change is the two different tires pr race rule. They have to use both the softer and the harder compound during the race, the soft tires are suppose to have a white stripe on them so look out for that.

Great photo Wayne, that's quite a view from the office
How you get any work done is beyond me

But its got nothing to do with saving the car, its got to do with testing and seting up the car, in testing they are not compeeting with each other, they are sacrificing full lap times for usefull telegraphy data of certaing aspects and areas of the track, tweeks, fuel loads effect, tire wear, aerodinamic setups, etc. they are not lapping with race or qualifying specs so its not useful for us to compare the lap times, for example in the first session Alonso was 1.6 seconds faster than Massa, but what did that say about what was going to happen on the second session? same thing happens at MotoGP.
Its just misleading because they are sacrificing the overall lap time result, which means nothing for them in practice, for adquisition of information to setup the car and also plan the race strategy. I agree that you can get a vague general feeling of which top 4 teams are going to be compeeting for the victory but thats about all you can gather, in this case it going to be between Ferrari, Mclaren, Renault, and BMW it seems.

I think that the two-compound during the race rule is great indeed! the trick will be to when during the race to use which. Especially which one are they using on the last stint.

I don't agree. This will once again introduce a "tire" variable into the race. I think it may ruin the outcome of a few races.

I'd rather have the outcome based purely on driver/car combo. Forcing them to use both a hard/soft tire isn't the way to improve the series. Just have them choose what they want - as all other racing series do.

Also wish they would scrap the qualifying system w/fuel load etc. I'd like to see who is the fastest - period.

You are correct! How did you know??? Considering you are all the way on the other side of the world, that is very good!

Thanks all for comments of the photo. You guys should see this view on a clear day, especially with the sea in the background. After 2 years, I still love it.

Now back to F1, practice session 3 just finished, and eventhough Kimi was fastest, Alonso is probably the fastest on the soft tyres on the last lap. He was almost half a sec up on Kimi until he overcooked it in the third sector. Qualifying will be fun!

PS: I am posting from the GP.

Re: Australia practice: Massa on top as Lewis shines

Outstanding updates and photo! Thanks a lot!

As I predicted earlier it will be a Alonso and Hamilton show.

It is McLarens year for wins after so many Kimi gaurdrail meals.

I think Carlos meant to say that Alonso was not doing "hot" Laps today of race ready set up. His laps were to tweak the car's set up further for his style and the track.
