    Quiet Tires and Cool Wheels

Dealer says Porsche recommends five (5) V-rated tires. Which one is the quietest? Car is used primarily for long-haul highway travel.

Also, seeking recommendations of source(s) for high quality wheels?

    Thanks

Re: Quiet Tires and Cool Wheels

First time Ive ever seen somebody wanting to make their 997 quieter!

Im guessing that you havn't gone for the PSE then????

He's referring to tire noise. IMO the PS2's are not that quiet. Not sure about the others. Most tires are at their best when new so quiet level is probably best determined after a few thousand miles.

Re: Quiet Tires and Cool Wheels

Continentals are quiet, much quieter than the michelin PS2's. I've got almost 9K on the set of contis...just as quiet as when new.

Re: Quiet Tires and Cool Wheels

the Conti's are rubbish though, had them on my M3 and changed them for PS2's, much better tyres in every way, apart from noise it seems but i'd rather have grip

Re: Quiet Tires and Cool Wheels

Hmmm dont forget treadwear though too. If I remember correctly the treadwear on the PS2 is far worse than the Conti's, which what with them having a higher RRP anyway makes them a much more expensive choice. All tyres have an official treadwear rating printed on the sidewall, so check this out.

I for one have never had a problem with the Contis on my M3, but then I dont and wont ever take my car anywhere near a track, so my requirements for grip are normal.

Re: Quiet Tires and Cool Wheels

    Good luck!!
Tire noise is more a function of the pavement construction/composition.

Drove my 'S' with PS2's around the nation .... at tines they would be silent, other times they would sing.

There are NO truly quiet tires!!

Re: Quiet Tires and Cool Wheels

Are you as tired of the old Michelling vs. Pirelly vs. Conti selection as I was? I had had enough of that old game so I got off that band wagon. I was also looking for a decent all-season tire to get me through what turned out to be a harsh winter.

What I found was an excellent tire that was far from an 'All season' compromise - BridgeStones Potenza RE960AS.

Don't just take my word - go read reviews for this tire at the Tirerack.

So far I am still in love with my Ultra High Performance All-Season Potenza RE960AS Pole Position tires with UNI-T AQ II Technology. These are by far the most quiet tires I have ever had on a 911 (after 500,000+ miles of driving these cars). They also come with an incredible 40K treadwear warranty and cost half as much as the PS2. You will never exceed the traction they provide on the street especially in the wet. (are they track tires - NO - but I bet they would be very close to the PS2 on the street or green light drag strip) They are the correct size (295/30/19) but have a little larger circumference than the PS2. This actually makes the spedo read closer to reality, gives a little better mileage and helps make the ride less harsh. After 5K on this set already (and snow duty over the winter) the tires are showing NO wear at all. At 5K my PS2 would be at the end of their optimum life span.
When I got them they had a 30 day trial offer so that you could buy them and return them if you did not like them. I discovered why they do this ... I bet no one returns them!!!

In terms of cool wheels - The S type 19" wheel is the lightest stock 19" wheel. That is all that matters to me.

Re: Quiet Tires and Cool Wheels

Try Bridgestone RE960's. They are a new tire from Bridgestone and come in Porsche 911 Carrera S/19 inch size. I had the Michelins and after 10k miles they rode like a buckboard/were noisy. The Bridgestone's are much quiter and have double the treadwear rating (i.e., longer life). And they are cheaper than the Michelins.

Anyone else out there with the 960's?

Buy a Bentley Continental GT , No noise at all

While I am not sure about the noise level (although Michelin's tend to be noisier on average), I would respectfully disagree with your characterization of the Conti's being rubbish, as the Conti's on my 911S have a great grip, especially in the wet, and given that my area is subjected to lots of thunderstorms, I appreciate that.

Maybe PS2's work better on the track or in really hot weather, that is, they likely have a stickier compound. I only have 6,630 miles on my 911S thus far, but I'll consider getting the stickier tires if my driving patterns encompass lots of track time in the future. Otherwise, I'll probably stick to the Conti's.
