    Warranty Battery replacement

    My car is sitting dead in my garage. The battery is just plain worn out. As you all may know by now I drive my car all the time so this is not a car that 'killed' the battery. Upon careful review of my manual it is clear that my battery is under warrany. I confirmed this with Porsche Cars North America after calling my roadside assistance number. Of course, since it is at home and I have charger I did not have them come over to help. Next I called the dealer who at first told me the battery was not under warranty. When I called back the service rep told me that I could bring the car by (taking for granted that it would somehow start) and that a series of expensive tests would be performed to see if the battery met the warranty guidelines. If it did not I would have to pay the cost of Battery and installation - $265. Keep in ming that he knows I can get the battery for $75 and install it myself in 5 minutes. It amounted to a dare to see if I would bring in the car, which I will tomorrow! Stay tuned to see how my 'triple or nothing' turns out. (if it turns out well I will be pleasantly surprised!)

    Here's my theory. It's why my car always is connected to a maintainer.

    Some cars draw more than the .25 amps that they're supposed to. My PCM was defective was replaced. It's malfunction also killed my battery (wouldn't hold charge anymore). They replaced the battery (and PCM) under warrenty.

    I have to check the current draw myself someday soon to see if it's NOW within the .25 amps as speced. I betcha it isn't.

    Anyway, this is a long way of saying make sure they check that the draw is .25 amps (when parked with key out of ignition). If not they will be scratching their heads to find out where the extra current is going.

    Could be the draw is too high and the _starter_ battery never keeps it's full charge (very bad for starter batteries). Definitely let us know what they say/did.

    I'll be interested to hear how this plays out...hard to believe a dealer would deny warranty claim on a battery on a car driven more than 6,000 per year. If they even imply they're going to do that you ought to ask to talk to the GM ASAP. Good luck.

    In an atmosphere that you would need a very sharp knife to cut the dealer replaced my battery under warranty. It was not pleasant and few words were spoken. I would have rather gone for a root canal than visit the dealer but this is business. The only reason I would ever want to move would be to be near a different dealer. I do want to thank my service manager, Todd, who must walk the tightrope of dealing with Porsche and customers like me who are very demanding.

    At any rate... the battery is now new and the car is running again.

    It was somewhat humerous when the car would not start for them to take it into the garage to 'inspect' it. The whole process of evaluating the battery was a little like the Monty Python 'Dead Parrot' routine.

    Oh well, another day at the dealer - what can I say. I think their customers are of two flavors - those who have money due to luck and those who understand money and it's value. They obviously cater to those who luck into money and could care less about expenses. Those customers who have money because they understand how to hang onto it are not appreciated.

    Anyway, I hope those of you contemplating a battery replacement consider the warranty route first now.

    Thanks for the advice. I don't drive mine a lot (only 6,627 miles in the first year), but I do keep it plugged into the battery maintainer all the time it's in the garage. I notice that the clock is invariably slow, so I know that the power drain is significant.

    Guess I'll have to watch the battery carefully for any signs that it is "dying."
