Noone, PTS is only valuable on resale if you find a buyer that is so in love with the color that he is willing to pay significantly more for a used car. What PTS does is on resale is substantially reduce the pool of interested buyers.Smiley

No it doesn't. A good color is a good color. A good color that is a rare color is also good and doesn't hurt resale at all, nor make it harder to sell.

Want to take a guess how much a rare color Porsche CGT sells for compared to Plain Jane Silver? I assure you it's a premium and if price the same, it would sell much quicker.

Painting your car lime green or pink isn't going to help. Painting you car a really deep and complex red will at the very least not hurt anything, and possibly even help sell it quicker.

Would you rather have the same color red as everyone else, or have a red that looks better and no one else has?

I heard recently that  Porsche is planning to outsource PTS painting , anyone heard the same?  (there is a precedent with very few 911 R which were painted outside, one of them was Dr. Piech 911 R).

It was never ever fully in-house.

For some quasi-PTS, like the optional Black/Yellow/Orange on the 911R, those are painted in-house as they are the regular production colours.

But for colours that are truly to sample, they always source it outside, easier for a outside paint shop to paint the body, bumpers and whatever trim needed to be painted the same colour at the same time than trying to match the colour from different suppliers of parts that were painted at different times.

Some out of range old colours are also painted outside for the same reason. Even when there is a strict formula, different pain shop will mix up the paint slightly differently, my Rivera Blue might be slightly off yours. One reason why it's a bitch to colour match colours after a collision and need repaint, the panels never matches completely. Heck, I have seen a Lava Orange GT3RS with the bumper slightly off vs the hood and that car came straight from the factory brand new.

One reason I love black, it will ALWAYS match! Smiley Not even white can be matched perfectly.

Thanks Whoopsy very interesting . When you refer to colors "truly to sample" are you referring to the ones on the Colors to Sample approved list or to the ones that need the feasibility test ?

Whether a color is good is purely subjective. A CGT (limited production) is a very small buyer base and PTS may induce a buyer to buy depending on price. That is totally different from PTS on a mass produced car. FWIW, a regular 911 PTS is around $6000 and yet a GT3 is $13,000. So if I am in the market for a used GT3 would many be willing to pay more than $13,000 because of the paint job?heartSmiley

As in you wife's favourite lipstick colour, your soiled underwear's hue, or whatever people dream of and wants to paint their car that colour. Smiley Or colours from other manufacturers for that matters. Porsche won't have the formula and has to be mixed from scratch.

The other so called PTS are almost always historic Porsche colours. Porsche have the formula for sure, but some are from the old days with solvent-based paint which are different than current water-based paint. They would come out very differently. Especially on modern car with 5-6 or more different material surfaces.

Some of those are already approved, Porsche had tested them and got on the approve list, and can be painted at the in house paint shop on the line.

I believe Porsche also has added few individual paint booth built to do some special jobs. See the videos on the Exclusive Series Turbo S, they are painting the golden yellow in-house for all the parts.

    Re: OFFICIAL: New 991.2 GT3

Porsche's new paint shop is state of the art, but it is normally stock with stock sports car colours. PTS, or more accurately, colour-on-request, means changing the feed to the robots to a different tank of colours just for one car. Not very efficient. But for some commonly requested colours, they can do batch painting within the automated line.

With their own individual paint booths now, they can pull a body-in-white off the line and paint one car at a time and not disrupt their production line too much.

Suppose to be cheaper to do it in house than to farm that off to a 3rd party like before, but Porsche's labour cost for employees are higher than outside 3rd party, and with so many requests now, why not charge more?

No, but you may pay a few thousand more and that means the original owner's expense was actually a few thousand less than $13,000.

It's not about making money back on resale, it's about having you absolute favorite color. I'd say $10K over 4-5 years of ownership makes it well worth it.

If you buy and sell cars every year or two then sure, maybe it's not worth it. Then again, if you get a new car every year or two, you clearly don't care about a mere $13,000 considering how much you're losing doing so.

Nick - what is the cost of all your options (none of which improve the performance)?  I wouldn't pay $25k for PTS, but there are plenty of other options that I feel are overpriced too.  I could be happy with Manual, White, LWB's and no other options...

Grant, no doubt many of the options I order are overpriced. But they options I use or enjoy while I am driving. The PTS option is almost 10% of the car value and something you cannot see or enjoy unless you sit in your garage and admire your $13,000 paint job.indecision

Likewise, I cannot be bothered to notice any of the interior options (other than LWB's) when I am truly enjoying the car's purpose either (which is driving to my limit on the track) Smiley

I caved and ordered full leather and a couple other things (like Lift) in order to be able to sell the car if necessary.  In the old days, a GT3 with full leather was considered an anachronism.  Now it seems mandatory to many...

    Re: OFFICIAL: New 991.2 GT3

Color is something you see very time you get in and out of the car.  Remains to be seen but I think even at $13k you will get every penny back  on resale

Leather on part of the door that cannot be seen when the door is closed will only be noticed on delivery and then probably never again.

Anyway, $0 white or black suits me fine.

it is a technical achievement but it is really ugly at least in this shade.

I would be happy to see the different shade they have in this special process paint.

for the price it is a joke nonetheless.

Not really a fan of either of those colours. I initially didn't like Miami at all as it had too much green in it for my taste, but having said that I was looking at one last week and it seemed better. Dependent on light conditions I think. Also the black bits on the GTs helps.
