Sold my 2002 745Li waiting for my cayenne Turbo! :)

Finally got rid of my 2002 745Li, i have modded that car with the AC schnitzer body kit. I was in love with the cars looks till yesterday. Unfortunately the car is a lemon, i lived 2 years of constant visits to the service center with various problems, with most of the problems coming back after they attempt to fix it. Ive learned from this expierence to never get a car from the first batch it comes out. i had litteraly gotten the 2nd batch of 2002's to get into my country. I think you should wait at least a year to get the manufacturer to work out all the problems with the car. Bought my 7 in June 2002 and was in the shop 22 times since i bought it

i am now looking forward to my 2004 Cayenne Turbo, cant wait till it arrives in june. got the following options

Congrats. Sorry about your 745.

A friend of mine is the warranty manager for a very major, celebrity-frequented BMW dealer in the U.S. Of the first 20 745s they sold, they had to buy back 12. The only reason they didn't buy back the others was because their owners didn't realise they could demand it.

The problem? Always the software. The car was rushed to market with the software unfit for consumption. No problem, generally with the mechanicals. But the car was a software disaster.

Imagine a car that crashes before you leave your garage!

Congrats, Fireo. Good decision, especially for Kuwait.

Don't forget to post pictures when you get your car.

Did you get the off-road design package or the off-road technical package...or both?

One of our Editors drives a 745i on a regular basis for his business and he loves it. But I also remember that he mentioned several electronics problems with that car.

If it was "only" a sofware problem, shouldn't it have been a relatively easy fix?

You would think so, but apparently the problem was that NO FIX EXISTED. So no one, at least in the U.S. dealer organization -- and this was a major big city dealer -- had the software fix.

And apparently, there were lots of different bugs affecting different systems, so there was no single fix.

You know what it's like with Windows, even when you have a great new computer and all new software on your desktop. It keeps crashing, from time to time. So imagine it in a car, but nobody knows how to fix the problems.

This suggests that the problem existed for a long time after the first 20 cars were sold.

Is the problem still going on? Do I have stock in BMW?

Since I've been using Windows XP, I've been pretty free of PC crashes. (Touches one huge redwood tree trunk). Let's hope for the sake of people who bought the wrong marque that BMW comes out with an iDrive XP PDQ.

Good question and I didn't get a follow up from him but I think by the end of the first year it was sorted out. And he did say that when the car was running, it was fabulous to drive.

And you're right. Hardly any problems with XP now, so maybe somebody at BMW should call Microsoft.
