    Re: 2008 997 info....?

So it's official? PDK in 2008?

    Re: 2008 997 info....?

2008???? As in July 2007 build?

Hmmm, now the dual-clutch might just make me wait. As an M3 SMG owner currently I would really love a true equiv on the 911. Tiptronic doesnt do it for me.

At least the small power hike of a mere 15 hp seems typical for Porsche.

    Re: 2008 997 info....?

Great news! Do they mention if the car is getting the face lift, or only the technical improvements?

(I was under the impression that technical changes were coming this year, and optical changes next year, but I might be wrong, so any clarification would be welcome)

    Re: 2008 997 info....?

I asked my dealer earlier in the week to get me something more specific about the speculation. He did say that it was impossible to get anything official, but today he said he had just had an unoffical off the record chat with somebody high up and in the know at PorscheHQ UK that none of the 911 changes will be coming into affect for at least another 12 months. He specifically included DKG, DFI and the facelift in the statement. He knows I will be pissed off now if this prooves not to be the case - esp on the DFI front more than anything.

Another 12 months is of course in keeping with the 2008 date above - unless of course 2008 was supposed to mean the MY08 build, in which case somebody is mis-informed or telling porkies!

Realise dealers are always in sales mode, but he seemed as if he really had spoken to somebody with influence and seemed genuine. Time will tell...

    Re: 2008 997 info....?

i think it will be MY08 three years after 997 launch just as with the 996
only reason not confirmed yet is to not destroy current sales

Adam, as a M3 cab owner (which I'm selling) with SMG I hope the new porshe transmission is nothing like the SMG. It was recalled a few times because it was such a bad trans., especially out 1st gear. I had wished I got the manual, because I spent a few thousand extra to get this "in my opinion, an inferior transmission.

    Re: 2008 997 info....?

I have the SMG and think it is fantastic. Most of the knocks are that it is not smooth. It all depends upon how you drive it. If you drive it poorly, the car will drive herky-jerky, just like a true manual. I am not sure what kind of problems mvn1971 had with 1st gear. I too am waiting for the DSG, hopefully not for too much longer.

It won't be. SMG is still single clutch. Dual clutch is something entirely different.

Good grief, another 12 months! Man, Porsche is really falling behind the state of the art in the automotive industry.

    Stat of the Art

Porsche is a pretty conservative company. Doubtful anyone would call it state of the art.

    Re: Stat of the Art

It will arrive with the MY09 cars. They will still be known as 997s.

It's definitely not like a true manual. The SMG has had poor reviews and it's been recalled for reprogramming twice.

    Re: 2008 997 info....?

I would have to disagree - SMG is the best gearbox on the market bar none. One day all cars will be made this way. Sorry if you disagree, but the vast maority of people who have owned (not just driven for a short time) think its the mutts nuts.

I have had 2 SMG cars from BMW and I will definatly but it (or equiv) again on any car that I can. Do not mistake SMG with other lesser sequential gearbox options out there on the market. It is quite simply an amazing piece of technology that increases driver satisfaction, not decreases as SMG haters would have you believe.

    SMG

Keep talking loudly without taking a breath and someone, somewhere, someday might agree with you. But since BMW are adopting DSG for the next generation M3 clearly they're not listening to you, or they disagree with your point of view.

If I were you I would look for an M3 with DSG that might be left at a dealer somewhere and snap it up. It will be the lonely looking 05 MY in the back corner of the lot...

I think it's more likely that no cars will be made this way and quite soon. DSG seems like the likely sucessor for the paddle-shift crowd. Should have better performance and longevity than SMG-style boxes...

    Surely you meant SMG

    Re: SMG

Its news to me that BMW are shifting to DSG on the new BMW M3. I very much doubt that - its far more likely to be a direct lift of SMG3 from the M5 or alternativly SMG4 than DSG. Anyway whichever system it is, BMW Audi or Porsche my point is that these types of transmision are far better than either manual or auto and one day will be standard, replacing both other options.

People really should try it before being so quick to critise and believe the myths circulated by critics. If sequential gearboxes are so bad why do many top motorsports use them as standard?

As for the comments re snapping up a cheap one, thats just not the case. Since SMG was launched more cars have been sold with SMG than manual and it remains a premium in price over manual on the used market. SMG cars are listed seperatly in glasses guide (UK dealers price bible) and they are always above manual prices.

    Check in with BMW

They have already confirmed with the press that the M3 will have DSG. You might ask them how soon the M5 will also have DSG. Accept it: the M5's biggest market has rejected SMG in favor of the antiquated stick shift. I think it's all over for SMG Robin...

And let's face it your figures are for a tiny market - not Germany or US. Game over Robin!
