That's not surprising, since this SC does not appear stock....engine note sounds different, the squeaking brakes indicate hard, racing pads and the roll bar would also point to more mods on the car.
The damp conditions are also a great equalizer.

You can also tell that the SC is not stock by the way they passed the 73RS clone on the straight at the beginning of the tape. If that car was anything close to the spec for a real 73RS, the SC would've been much slower (less power and >300 lbs more weight)...

Guys, that SC maybe had close ratio gears and maybe 260hp from a built 3 liter. Thats all doable in a streetable SC.
The roll cage could be a bolt in, we dont know - or even know what he has for brakes. But we do know he doesnt have 18X10 wheels with steam roller rubber and another 30 years of chassis development.
Carrying way less weight into the corners, no power steering and a very sharp almost instant mechanical throttle response is a lot of fun.
I doubt if most would even guess that a almost 30yr old
modded but less powerful 911 with much less brakes and suspension could annoy a new 997S so much on a track.

My 34 year old 911 has passed its fair share of GT3's too
My 73 911 2.7L covered the same track in 5 secs less per lap (only 76 second laptime) than my 2002 996 C2 3.6L - both with me driving...

My 71 modded 911S was way more fun than my 94 RS America. It sounded better, was more tossable and had better throttle response. Not quicker or faster, but more fun to drive. It was even roomier inside. I made a big error in selling it but I had too many cars and rust was starting to show up again. The RS was totaled this fall in a chain collision on 405 and I havent decided what machine to get next. Lots of the newer stuff gives a synthetic driving experience and is just too insulated and refined for my tastes.

Sorry about the RSA. Yeah, even my modified 993 feels too refined for me, except when driving on the highway. Jim, maybe it's time for another long-hood car for you

Grant, what is the cost to modify a 25 year old Porsche to make it competitive with the 911's of today?

The cost to build one is much higher than the cost to buy one already built (what I did). The price can really vary depending on what you want to end up with. The cheapest Porsche one can buy that will run with a 997S is a modified 944 Turbo. You can spend around $15k on a completed car to get the job done well. 911's are more expensive and need more extensive mods to compete. Probably around $25k on a completed car minimum.

Nick, you might want to look online at hemmings, pcars and rennlist to shop for a dual purpose 911. I've done the 944 turbo thing. They are quick and fast but they don't have that ride to hell personality of a older 911. Older 911s have a very raw, point and shoot feel and are a blast to drive. Don't go newer than a SC because of the extra weight. If you go older than 74, expect to pay more for a excellent example as the prices are climbing and upgrades will cost you more.
You might also enjoy a older BMW street/track car. One of the worlds expert builders is in your neighborhood. BMW Independent La Jolla upgrades 60's/70's 2002's and early 3 series with late model 6cyl/gearboxs and brakes. They are fast as hell on the track. The owner built my lightweight BMW 1602 street/track car with a engine from a BMW Pikes Peak Hillclimb Team car.It rev'd easily to 9000rpm.
It was basically a BMW Formula 2 engine in a 1900lb road car that looked completely innocent.
