Cayenne Turbo - UK Friends Help

I have been considering buying a Cayenne for some time and after seeing and test driving the new Turbo, I am very close to making a decision, and Im looking for some help from UK Rennteamers.

I sort of live in between Madrid and London, until now I have bought and kept all my cars in Madrid but I am considering now buying the Cayenne in the UK to keep it here in London. I have the following questions, Thanks in advance for your help:

1 - I went to the dealer in Mayfair yesterday. I was told if I bought now, I could expect to get the Turbo by October. is this a realistic timing or am I getting screw buy having never bought a car in the UK? In Spain I could get one by June/July. is this a good dealership should I check others?

2 - Also, in Spain I usually get anywhere from 3 to 6% discount depending on the model. What could I realistically expect/ask for in London?

3 - Another possibility would be for me to get the car in Spain but then I would have a car that is left-hand drive. Anyone has any experience on how's life with a left hand drive car in the UK?

    Thanks for your help.

Re: Cayenne Turbo - UK Friends Help

The order lead time sounds about right to me. My dealer has an allocation of only 2 (yes 2!) Turbo's until July and then only expects to get 2 more for the rest of the year. You might be better to order a C16 spec (right hand drive) car from your dealer in Spain. If they give 6% discount I may get you to order me one too

Re: Cayenne Turbo - UK Friends Help

    Thanks.

Question for you, I guess you are saying that I could get right-hand drive from the dealer in Spain. If I did, what about the registration etc. Do I get that in Spain and drive to the UK with EU plates and Spanish insurance or could I then get all that in the UK? Hope you can help. Thanks.

If Spain is anything like Belgium or Germany your dealer should be able to register the car on temporary transit plates as a tax free export so that you can both insure it and drive it to the UK. Once in the UK you will be able to go to your local DVLA office and register the car on UK plates if you wish and pay for its road fund licence. You will also be required to complete a declaration form for UK customs and excise declaring the purchase price of the car in Spain (along with copy of your invoice) net of tax. You will then receive a bill from customs and excise for the VAT on the car which will be 17.5% of the tax free purchase price. I'm not sure if the tax in Spain is any cheaper. If it is you should register the car in Spain. I think you can then re-register it in the UK after 6 months without paying VAT if you can prove it has been mostly used in Spain. Best to check out the DVLA website for the full details though. The only thing you need do thereafter is notify Porsche GB in Reading of your chassis number so that they can make the car visible on the UK dealers service system.

Re: Cayenne Turbo - UK Friends Help

The order time is correct (OPCs have a much larger allocation than other dealers). You will get 0% discount from any OPC in the UK whether you have bought 0 or 10 cars from them . The guys at Porsche Mayfair are pretty straightforward, and generally give very good service. I can't comment on driving a LHD in London, but life's tough enough with a RHD Cayenne Turbo!

Re: Cayenne Turbo - UK Friends Help

I had to register my car in the UK after purchasing it from a German dealer. Same principles apply. Here's some info that may be useful to you:

Thanks easyrider. Very detailed info on your posting.

Re: Cayenne Turbo - UK Friends Help

timig for Turbo was next year for me, I have never EVER managed to get any discount on a new Porsche.
so I took my business to MB & got 8% discount on ML63AMG and pick it up tomorrow.
it ain't a Cayenne granted, but is still a good car plus the deal was too good to turn down.
come on Porsche UK everything in life is negotiable.

Being a fellow Brit I had the same impression that Porsche would laugh at the word discount, but things here in Switzerland are different. I was sitting with the Porsche salesman last August when he was pricing up a new Cayenne V6 which we were thinking of ordering. He deducted 3.5% without even asking, most unexpected..

Re: Cayenne Turbo - UK Friends Help

The number of Cayennes being allocated to UK dealers is so small that you don't have a prayer on getting a discount on the new model. Porsche have curtailed supply it appears in an attempt to protect the brand. Demand is sure to outstrip supply for these cars but the used market for the existing model is very different. My current Cayenne is owned by my Company but I thought I'd hawk it around 3 OPC's to guage it's value. It's less than two years old with a huge spec and in a very saleable colour combination and a reasonable mileage of circa 20k miles. Not one of the dealers wanted to know and didn't even discuss price to see how low a bid I'd accept. It seems they are all sitting on high stock levels and really do not want any more which is somewhat worying when considering the purchase of a new model car costing a lot of cash. How much do we stand to lose in depreciation on these cars I wonder in future? I also know a couple of people who have tried to trade in late model BMW X5's against the new model X5 at BMW dealers who have received the same negative response so it seems that the SUV backlash is starting to bite.

I'd be inclined to buy and register it in Spain, then drive it to the UK and park it here on a Spanish plate. See how long you can avoid paying the congestion charge for!

Had my spanish plated car in London for three years..... Never paid congestion tax nor fed the meter.

Re: Cayenne Turbo - UK Friends Help

You have to feed parking meters otherwise you will get a ticket and then a little while later a wheel clamp.

Re: Cayenne Turbo - UK Friends Help

no parking clamps just tickets never paid one....foreign plated cars need to be registered at local authorities attributing it to a local address. No registration no uk address. Moreover no speed traps.

Re: Cayenne Turbo - UK Friends Help

Yes - but if you had left your car (without paying for the meter) for maybe 1-2 hours longer without moving your car, you would have a nice yellow clamp on the wheel. Leave it for about 6 hours like that and they lift your car up and take it away!

The authorities here are becoming more strict with foreign cars.
