    Oil Recommendation for 3.8L 997 (2006)

    I have a question regarding oil recommendations for 997's, specifically ones with the 3.8L (I have a 2006 911 C4S with a little over 7000 mi on it). Porsche recommends Mobil 1 0W-40 oil, which I used for my first oil change. I just had a rather large supply delivered (to have several interim oil/ filter changes worth on hand), and noticed that these bottles look almost identical to the old ones (purchased in June of 2006), with two main exceptions. Below the main label, the oil has "European Car Formula" listed in rather small font. The newer bottles do not have the "SuperSyn Technology" logo printed on the bottle either. The information printed on the back of the bottles is very similar to my old 0W-40 quarts (I have a few left over), other than being rearranged and otherwise altered a bit, and thus communicates the same basic info. I am wondering if this is a separate type of 0W-40 or is simply a newer version.

    I did a couple of quick searches on this topic, and found nothing that directly related. Does anyone have any ideas? I mainly want to know if this is the exact same stuff, and just an updated bottle/ marketing strategy. If this were true, I'd assume that ALL Mobil 1 0W-40 oil now has "European Car Formula" printed on the front label and lacks the "SuperSyn" labeling at the top of the label. Any information would be greatly appreciated!

    Re: Oil Recommendation for 3.8L 997 (2006)

    I think Mobil One has been changing its oil formulations from some things I've read...

    Re: Oil Recommendation for 3.8L 997 (2006)

    I just bought two quarts yesterday (not sure how long it was on the shelf), but it still has the SuperSyn wording.

    Re: Oil Recommendation for 3.8L 997 (2006)

    Don't waste your time with those things. It's probably a mix of all mentioned so far by other Rennteamers; updated packagind, some more additives in the oil blend, etc.

    What I suggest is you refer to TFM on page 204 where it reads that ALL current engine oils are compatible with each other. Literally -and according to TFM- you can always mix different brands. You should only try to use the same brand when it comes to topping up between oil changes, but this isn't imperative as well.

    Also, bear in mind, that Mobil 1 isn't the best oil in the world but an overpromoted business agreement between the two companies. See other recommended by Porsche oil in the attached pdf.

    My Porsche Zentrum (dealer) uses Shell Helix oils for maintenance and oil changes.

    Re: Oil Recommendation for 3.8L 997 (2006)

    Does he use Helix or Helix Ultra. The latest is recommended by Porsche the first not!

    Hey function,

    Thank you for the "approved oils" PDF.

    Re: Oil Recommendation for 3.8L 997 (2006)

    MMD, you're always welcome man!

    Re: Oil Recommendation for 3.8L 997 (2006)

    Again, many thanks for the comprehensive list of oils approved by Porsche in the tech service bulletin pdf file you provided in a previous post.

    I know, ain't that great when a guy (like function in this case) posts this kind of very helpful information?

    It's like I wish I could give them a grateful nod, a smile and buy them a beer.

    Re: Oil Recommendation for 3.8L 997 (2006)

    @JIM48
    Thx, its just a tiny anti-contribution to all the Rennteamers common culture who believe in the magical effects of Mobil One in our engines. Actually, I do find it very ironic and almost unbelievable that P-owners tend to consume tons of this oil at the same time that other serious brands not only are approved by Porsche but they also worth our confidence.

    @MMD
    The beers are on me! Catch the flight to Athens (Greece, not Georgia) and let's have a P-party around here.

    In any case I have lots of interesting P-literature that I plan to share with all of us here as soon as the right posts come up.

    I have a "million" Porsche photos. Just waiting for the right posts too.

    Me take a trip to Athens? Will be hard to get current wife's approval. I'd be "paying" for it for the rest of the year. A few years ago I went to Turkey by myself (with an old college buddy) and it wasn't pretty when I got home. Thanks anyway!
