Leather interior - how hard to maintain?

My dealer told me the leather interior is hard to maintain, esp for a track car.

I love to drive without air con and windows down, but the air polution here is terrible.

I am thinking not to order the full leather for my GT3, because I don't want to care about it while I am enjoying the car.

    1. Is it easy to get scratches and damages?
    3. Is it unrepairable once it was damaged?
    2. The leather needs any special way to clean it?

    Thank you.

Re: Leather interior - how hard to maintain?

Where do you live? I think your dealer is talking trash unless he is speaking of a GT3 or GT2.

I have my top down all the time and my leather is exposed to the sun more than most cabs would (due to our good weather). I just treat the leather every 2 weeks and it still looks brand new! I can take some photo's later just to show.

Re: Leather interior - how hard to maintain?

He is talking about the GT3.

Any special treat for your leather?

Re: Leather interior - how hard to maintain?

the cow took care of it for a few years and did just fine.
    go for it.

Re: Leather interior - how hard to maintain?

Leather care for Porsche pigmented leathers is eeeeeasy.

Just wipe with a damp terry or microfiber towel, followed by dry towel, every few weeks. When dirt accumulates beyond damp towel removal, use a leather cleaner and a damp towel.

Most owners won't need leather conditioners until they've had the car for a few years.

When you do use a conditioner MAKE SURE it's Porsche-approved. If it's not you take a chance of turning your pigmented leather into a sticky mess.

Re: Leather interior - how hard to maintain?

perhaps what they meant was that leather is too slippery for the track.
do they offer cloth or alcantra in the GT3 ?

Re: Leather interior - how hard to maintain?

Both actually. Stock GT3 is Alcantara. And the Clubsport package has cloth seats.

I agree it would not necessarily suit the character of the car. Looks and smells nice, though.
IMHO don't get the full leather interior in your case. The standard plastics have improved a lot over those in the 996.

unbelieveable, the owner takes really good care of it!

Re: Leather interior - how hard to maintain?

Altak, I take the personal pleasure of waxing the car. I have a country house and I spend there some 6-7 hours per session for washing/cleaning/waxing, caring for wheels, plastics and rubbers, windows, interior fittings and leather.

I admit it's pretty hard but aparat from the optical result that really worths the time spent I am convinced that I safely return the showroom appearence to my P-car w/o exposing her to the automated washing machines stress.

If you need further input PM directly.

Thanks, it's mine and i took the pic a couple weeks ago. Leather should hold up well if you treat it with leather specific moisturizer a couple times a year.

    And AVOID direct sun.

Re: Leather interior - how hard to maintain?

I wouldn't worry about getting leather seats on a track focused car. All you need to do is wipe it clean with a damp cloth and every other wash moisturize it with a good leather conditioner. I would recommend lexol it is great for P car leather. Also the side blosters should be treated each wash so cracks don't develope in these well worn areas

Re: Leather interior - how hard to maintain?

How often do you guys use the leather conditioner? (Lexol and such)

Re: Leather interior - how hard to maintain?

Not that easy to get an answer. Swissol system for example, don't use leather conditioner (at least doesn't call it as such), instead they give leather cleaner, leather milk, healer and glaze. You'd rather ask for advice from your product dealer.

FYI see the attached Swissol Handbook in pdf.

Personally I use it when I notice the leather starting to dry out or is loosing its luster. In the summer time its usually once a month at least (I have a cab). During the winter perhaps every six weeks. One thing to note. I usually use the lexol on the driver side bolster both on the seat bottom and the seat back each time I wash the car. These areas usually will breakdown easily from getting in and out of the car. Keeping these areas conditioned and soft has kept the bolsters from wearing and cracking. They look almost as good as new.

Re: Leather interior - how hard to maintain?

Racing automobiles and leather upholstery do not match. One characteristic of leather is that it does a marvelous job of retaining heat. You want a material that will wick moisture away from the driver suit and remain breathable to allow for evaporation. In the past wool was much favored for this application due to the properties listed above, its durability and resistance to flame.
