    My embarrassing experience

Hi folks, just came back from a track day. let me brief you on what has happened. The track day before this one (driving a 9964s with x51) i was in group B (996 s 4,4s) I won first place. In fact my pole position was 4th overall, in front of turbos and gts. Now, i just purchased a 996tts and i did terrible on this track day. The people who i had beaten before got better times than me. I placed ninth over all. My time in the 996 4s was better. Has anyone experienced this, if so what is different about the handling of the two cars? What should i do different next time? Any advice would be appreciated thanks.

Maybe your friends did some additional driver trainings in the meantime and did not tell you

P.S.: I don't think the car is to blame

    Re: My embarrassing experience

The car is never to blame! I want advice on how to change my driving skills to match the car.

The car is to blame for being too fast and thus forcing the driver to slow down .

No, really, could it have something to do with turbo lag?

In my experience, 95% (if not more) of all sportscar drivers could drive similar lap times if they just practiced enough. Only on a very advanced level talent does play a major role.

You simply may need to practice more. Talent is probably still rather uminportant at your (and also my ) level of track driving. Talent will be only be the limitating factor after dozens of traings / hundrets of track days

    Re: My embarrassing experience

What was your tire pressure set at? Did you feel the car understeer? Tires maybe turned to mush and grip was lost? Were both events timed? I know I'm asking alot of quistions, I just want to know as much detail so I can better appreciate what happened.

    Re: My embarrassing experience

    Its the tyres for sure...

    Re: My embarrassing experience

Has everyone forgotten the answer? The TT is HEAVY and does not perform as well on the the track as lighter cars like the GT3 - especially in this case where the driver is the *same*.

So, the car IS to blame...!

    Re: My embarrassing experience

maybe it's the fact that the TT is heavier and that it's got turbo lag but there are a lot of things to think of...

    the suspension...what is its condition???
what about the alignment of the wheels???
    what about the tires???
does your car have a slip diff??? is it working well???

but I think the most important thing of all is the fact that it's a new car, to you, and you need some time to get used to how it feels...

    Re: My embarrassing experience

He is not comparing his 996TT to a Gt3. He's comparing it to a 996C4S with X51. Yes the turbo is a bit heavier but the extra HP should help close that gap on the straights. It could be turbo lag, tires, or more experience with the newer vehicle? Too many factors to consider, give it another shot after you've driven her a little more?

    Re: My embarrassing experience

It could be partically as simple as recognizing how familiar you were with the 996 vs the tt? I know it takes me some time to get the feel of a new car after driving my old one for a while.

    Re: My embarrassing experience

I have owned a 996 Carrera and now a 996 Turbo and tracked them both. Your experience is rather strange to me. Everything else kept equal, in no way will a Turbo be slower ! In bone stock condition the TT is already very well at ease on track. Add some race compound tires, race brake pads and high temperature brake fluid and off you go. The weight is more a problem for your brake rotors than for the driving itself.

Turbo lag is not an issue at all. The 996 TT delivers its 560Nm maximum torque as soon as at 2.700 rpm. The 996 C4S' atmospheric engine in a way has more "lag" since it needs more revs to get its torque on the wheels.

    Re: My embarrassing experience

Could come down to tire pressure/compound/etc. Also, learning a new car may have something to do with the slower times.

Get more seat time and become more comfortable with the difference in power/weight.

A turbo isn't that much heavier than a C4S... in fact P/W ratio should be better.

    Theres always the GT3
