    First impressions

I've just had a sneak preview of a couple of Cayennes and heard the sports exhaust on the S whilst stationary and being revved. I have to say that I am somewhat underwhelmed by the restyle and may cancel my order and take a new model X5 instead. The PSE gives a slight edge to the exhaust note but I don't think I'd order it after hearing it. Certain elements of the restyle look good such as the new crease line that runs into the top of the front wing from the door mirror and reduce the slightly bulbous look of the current car. I'm not convinced by the black painted panel under the rear window though and much prefer the current version with the aluminium trim strip.

Admittedly the cars I saw were not highly spec'ed externally but one had the 20" sport Techno's, PSE and monochrome package and just looked bland IMHO. I have to make my mind up by Friday as I can get an April build 3.0d X5 which is a stroke of luck here in the UK as most of this year's allocation is sold out I believe. I think I'll be taking the X5 as it has a fresher, modern look and will most definately have a much better residual value here.

    Re: First impressions

In the manual, for the PSE to kick in, the Sports button must be activated. Just wondering if that was done before revving. Can you confirm it? I guess it's too late for me as I will be getting my new Cayenne S in a week or two, as the very first builds.

    Re: First impressions

I can't say for definate as the salesman was the one revving the car. He claimed it was on but he may have been wrong. It did sound faintly raspy but the tailpipes are a lot less impressive than the current sport ones from a purely visual perspective. I was told that the new car is a revelation to drive if fitted with PASM and PDCC but these are expensive options so an OPC will be keen to push them. I did like the black headliner you now get if you order the black interior but it may not be to everyone's taste.

    Re: First impressions

Hope that the salesman is wrong and most of the time they are I was told the PSE sports tail pipe would be more impressive than perhaps the ones on the TT? Did they look exactly like the TT dual pipes?

I was ranting a lot to OPC to have a black rooflining like those in BMWs. I am hoping it will be nice.

    Re: First impressions

I was talking to a salesman friend today about the PSE in the Cayenne, he just came back from the dealer presentation in Spain and got to drive PSE equiped Cayennes. He said the change in sound was clearly obviuos, and up in the higher rev range he was impressed by how the V8 sounded. I haven't driven one with PSE so I can't say yet.

    Re: First impressions

The black rooflining is very BMW like. I'm just disappointed I didn't come away with a more positive view of the car. Whilst the meteor grey looks ok I actually prefer the current titanium grey which seems to have more brightness and life to it. I'm sure the looks will grow on me in time but I'm 90% certain I'll switch my order to the X5.

    Re: First impressions

The X5 is a nice option as well, it would be my second choice behind the Cayenne with the rest of the makes trailing far behind these two, so I'm sure you won't be disappointed with either choice you make.

The thing I don't like about the X5 is that the BMW service is not that great here, the X5 are extremly common and with an X5 looking X3 version, and that most X5 are oil burners (diesels). So all three reasons are somewhat location related, in another country it may be different.

    Re: First impressions

    Carlos,

I understand your points. Here in the UK the BMW dealers are generally good (the one I'll buy from, should I opt for an X5, is excellent). Another compelling reason to go for the X5 is that it will be around Pounds13k GBP less expensive and will hold it's value a lot better than a V8 petrol Cayenne.

    Re: First impressions

Then you have got some thinking to do in the next days because the X5 is a great option as well then

what part are you talking about?
    ____

    Re: First impressions

he is talking about the alum strip under the rear window on the rear view, in the facelift its completely black under the window now

    Re: First impressions

Carlos, spot on. Porsche have done this to give the visual impression of making the rear glass area appear larger from a distance. It's an old designers trick to fool the eye.

    Re: First impressions

At the London Mayfair Cayenne launch last night. I would have to agree with ISUK that the PSE sports pipes are a bit disappointing in design and coolness. I much prefer if they look like the old quad big-small sports pipes.

However, I found out that the PSE sound only comes on around 3000rpm and while moving, not while revving at standstill. Its due to noise level emission regulations that the sound is kept down. If one can somehow remove or immobilise the sound exhaust flap then the sound would stay on.

The black rooflining is pretty good in my opinion, might be a bit darker than the previous grey but its what I want. Got to get used to it more.

I forgot about the drive by noise regulations so that explains a lot, thanks The engine sounds very quiet when revved at standstill. I'm still in two minds about my order as the pics of a meteor grey Turbo with 21" wheels, privacy glass and roof rails in this month's Evo mag look quite good. I hope to try and see a better optioned car over the weekend before commiting to the X5.
