    What oil to top off GT3?

    Need to top off oil in 997 GT3, however, the owners manual gives me multiple options. Would anyone know what is the best grade of oil to use and what brand? Most likely use synthetic mobile.

    You better ask your dealer what brand and grade was originally added in your engine.
    As a general rule all engine oils are compatible with each other so you don't need to flush your engine when changing oil and you wish to use a different brand or grade.
    In your case you should try to use the originally added oil, but only if this is possible. Otherwise follow the general rule.

    Mobil1 0-40 is the factory fill.

    If your dealer is a good guy, he may give you a qt. for free.

    Should be a sticker under the rear deck lid.

    I believe in the USA you can only typically find Mobil1 in two grades 0W-40 and 5W-40 (I could be wrong). I would use the 5W (harder to find?) because you might burn it off less quickly (i.e. consumption may go down).

    Nice info! Do you really have some facts proving that 5W-40 Mobil 1 really affects (positively, I mean) the oil consumption? Or is this just a feeling?

    As between 0W-40 and 5W-40, at high temperatures, they both have the same viscosity but at lower temperatures (-25C I think), 0W protects better. So for most people, it won't make a difference

    I read so much stuff, some about cars. Anyway I know when I read about this 5W stuff (a while ago on the boards) I immediately filed it in my brain and decided never to use the 0W anymore because I was a bit concerned about my oil comsumption.

    There was a massively informative thread about oils about a year ago. Explained why only these two oils were recommended for our engines (and other stuff). THAT'S where I latched onto using only the 5W. Since using it oil consumption dropped but that also may be result of engine getting better with age.

    I'd use the 5W and forget it: unless you live wher it is very cold during startup.
