Porsche MotorSport

Does anyone here on this board have any information when Porsche will return to Le Mans with a car that will be capable of winning overall? And for 2008 if Audi still races the R10 will Porsche finally move to LMP1 to take on Audi? Just my opinion, I dislike everything about Audi road cars and race cars and just wish Porsche would have a car to destroy the Audi R10. I just find it funny that Porsche has been in the series since 1999 and never had or built a car to win overall? That is why I think they lost one of the best sports car driver in the world to Audi that being Lucas Luhr.

I don't think they will return to LMP-1 as long as Audi is there. The close association of the companies I think would cause this. It's a real shame. However, with Peugot and Acura entering the fray it should be better this year.

There was a rumor that Porsche had been contracted by Audi to design the R8 and part of that agreement was Porsche could not compete in P1 with a factory car until around 2005. If true this might explane Porsche absence until lately with RS Spyder. Even though this is a P2 car it is nearly as fast as the new Audi R10 and faster than the R8 on certain tracks.

Like you I wish Porsche would go for another outright LeMans win...they have the enginnering skill, history and $ to go for it!!

Audi is almost finished in LMP-1 I think. Maybe 2 more years...

IMHO Porsche wants to solidify its LMP-2 car and have a good base of customers minimum 6-10 cars or 4-6 teams, and then they will modify the current 675 car to run as a factory car (as opposed to factory backed) in LMP-1.

I doubt they will do it while Audi is running, but I also think the lure of winning all 3 classes of LeMans in the same year is too much to pass up on...

The cars are almost as fast...but consider that Audi has had many weight penalties and air restrictors to now make it close in speed. They somehow tune the car a little more everytime a penalty is added and somehow comes out on top. The Audis are still superior till now. If they start getting beat then the penalties might start coming off and we will see what happens then.
