If there is one country you need AWD, it is Switzerland.  Smiley The 911 doesn't really suffer from traction issues but it helps.

Parts of Canada and US get plenty of snow too (we get snow in Denver, but it usually melts away fast unless in mountains west of town).  Like Quebec and Western New York state for example...

Switzerland has lots of smaller roads which can be tricky to drive without AWD, especially if they go up... Smiley

I didn't say that Switzerland is the only country with snow, ice and cold weather in winter time. Bavaria sucks as well during that period of time, especially close to the Alps. Of course...Canada...USA mountain regions...no doubt.

    Re: 991.2 Carrera 4 GTS

In Switzerland if you go regularly to the mountain during the winter , it makes perfect sense to have an AWD .  I manage fine with my RWD since 9 years every winter , but I stay mostly in the plain . Compared to my former 4S , I have to be much more careful and drive much slower with my 2S .   And with today's 991 AWD system not being felt behind the steering wheel , it ' s a no brainer .

As the car is silver , it is ok . White would of had to be in  RWD Smiley

    Re: 991.2 Carrera 4 GTS

IMHO the additional traction and improved steering feel in the 991 all-wheel drive cars does make it a no brainer. It is quicker than the rear wheel drive GTS, but that was not a reason.

Our place in the alps is at the end of a steep hill. I would not dare going up there without all-wheel drive.

Many congratulations bluelines - a great choice! I had a 991/2 Carrera S as a loner when our Boxster was having its 2 year service and was hugely impressed. Only SWMBO with her sensible head on stopped me signing on the dotted line there and then. Definitely gave me the Rennteam Itch - and it hasn't gone away either! Smiley

Yes, indeed but when it happens... Smiley

We once went to Ischgl (Austria) and rented a small chalet outside the main resort area. I had a 996 C2 at that time. Little did I know that the chalet was at the top of a steep hill and of course, since it wasn't the main resort area in Ischgl, they didn't clean up the snow there. I had to leave the car at the bottom of that hill over night because it was basically impossible to go up (yes, I had winter tires but no snow chains with me). I always made it to half of it and the car got stuck (no, snow was not high, ground clearance was OK but traction just wasn't good enough). I lost 2 kg that holiday because we also had to carry the luggage up and down that hill (around 400 meters or so... Smiley) and of course our skiing equipment. The rental company said they mentioned that hill in the description but they actually only mentioned that the chalet is on a "beautiful hill", not that you need a Mercedes G class with chains to be able to climb up that hill. Smiley

Actually, all the way up. I was there again the second year, in my 996 C4 Powerkit. No problem (other than when I went downwards that hill, pretty slippery but luckily there was around 500 meters of road ahead (after the hill) but before the main road with lots of traffic came, so I was able to slow down the car. Smiley We didn't go there anymore because of that...and because the price went up by 30% or so the third year, they did some renovation.

That is pretty much the situation we are in. Off the main roads, steep and snow not cleaned up.

Then again, it does not have to be in the mountains. A few years back I did not make it up the hill to our home in the winter even if I had good winter tires on the 997.2 S. It is not a nice feeling when the car comes to a halt and starts sliding backwards on a narrow road with stone walls on each side. Luckily I pressed the clutch to get the wheels rolling and could somewhat controlled steer while rolling down backwards. Had to walk up and get the car the next day.

All-wheel drive is a bit like the front axle lift. Mostly you don't need it, but when you need it, then you really need it indecision
