    New Porsche Design Chief

    Porsche has hired the GM Europe design chief, Michael Mauer, to start about 1 November. Of course we won't see his influence for several years but it could be interesting.

    That was Harm Lagaay. He's from the Netherlands and was head of design since 1989.

    I think it was Tony Hatter (British fellow) who was most responsible for the 993's look.

    It's interesting to note that Porsche went "outside" for their new design chief. What does that say about the design group talent. And does that mean that PAG is changing some basic strategies in the future....like the 998 and beyond???? People will be analyzing this for awhile! And from GM yet.

    Wonder what his "credentials" are to have gotten this plum of a job?

    Something that makes me proud of him... a dutchman designing such beautiful cars!!! (To bad he designed the Cayenne too) He was mainly responsable for the boxster, the 996, the Cayenne and THE CGT!!!

    What current design of ANY GM vehicle would make Porsche want to do such a thing?!?

    GM is a mass marketer of "crap" automobiles. I can't understand this logic. Please tell me that there are some Euro designs that we here in the states are not privvy to.

    Mauer was also responsible for the original SLK and the A-Class, and apparently contributed to the Maybach.

    And just one more pic ... here's a design he did for Saab, which probably makes this his most recent work.

    He was brought on at GM to help move SAAB styling forward. His career in design management is based mostly on his decade at MBZ . In other words , don't blame him for the Chevy Mailbu , etc.

    hearty agreement; MB designs profilers very well, and they are unattractive if different [slr, slk] and boring when not [e, s]. as porsche moves more into "selling" rather than performance, the guy is perfect...to help run porsche into the ground
