    997 GT3 vs 997 Turbo track comparison!

It's a test published by the italian magazine TOP AUTO, but since the drive is performed by Kurt Thiim, I suppose it has already been published somewhere...
Anyhow, the few words of comment give an absolute superiority to the Turbo, which even with the handicap of the standard tyres (vs semislicks), posts a better lap time as well as better acceleration figures.

Re: 997 GT3 vs 997 Turbo track comparison!

Turbo is the King, GT3 is his little brother.

Re: 997 GT3 vs 997 Turbo track comparison!

    King and the Prince

Re: 997 GT3 vs 997 Turbo track comparison!

So the GT2 when it comes out will be King's dad?

    LOL!

Re: 997 GT3 vs 997 Turbo track comparison!

    repost...

Re: 997 GT3 vs 997 Turbo track comparison!

Wow, I can not beleive that the Turbo ended up being quicker then the GT3 w/ cup tires. I goes to show that Porsche didn't hold back much when I came to the Turbo performing on the track and the street. It would be interesting to see what the out come would have been with the turbo having cup tires.

Re: 997 GT3 vs 997 Turbo track comparison!

GT3 was faster in all the corners...

Actually, Porsche DID hold back on the Turbo's performance, readily demonstrated with simple mods. to the Turbo's ECU and exhaust by members of this forum.

Re: 997 GT3 vs 997 Turbo track comparison!

Faster in corners is nothing if there is no power to back it up on the straights.

Over a 1:40ish lap, the Turbo is ahead only by 0.76sec, may not seem much but remember the Turbo is on street tires and that's the difference in the cornering speed. With equal tires the Turbo would be much farther ahead.

I think the GT3 is like a .22 handgun and the Turbo is a .45 magnum, both can kill but take your pick on precision or power.

Re: 997 GT3 vs 997 Turbo track comparison!

True, they did. And as they did hold back performance I did hold back my order

Isn't the 997tt about as fast as the 996GT2? IMO it appears to be a very good improvement and terrific value compared to its competition. Yes, they could have made it even faster, but that's not in Porsche's best interest since they can offer "S" versions etc.

As for track times compared to the GT3 -- I would suspect that in the hands of mere mortals (class B drivers), which most of us are, the TT should be even quicker around most tracks. In fact, last summer, I spoke to someone owning both a CGT and 996tt, who said to be faster driving his turbo around the track.

The GT2 is faster than the 997 Turbo.

Sport Auto tested the "factory" tuned 997 S (381hp,different suspension setup) and it was as fast as the 997 Turbo around the Hockenheimring. So,it's pretty obvious that Porsche's priority wasn't speed when they developed the Turbo.

996GT2? I don't recall ever seeing anything to that effect

    997 Carrera S(-20mm/LSD,PCCB) 1.14,4min
    997 Carrera S(X51,-20mm/LSD,PCCB) 1.13,7min

    997 turbo(LSD,PCCB) 1.13,7min
    997 turbo(Michelin Cups,LSD,PCCB) 1.11,9min

    997 GT3(Michelin Cups,PCCB) 1.11,7min

All times by Sport Auto on Hockenheim Kleinkurs...

Re: 997 GT3 vs 997 Turbo track comparison!

The 996 GT2(483hp,Michelin Pilot Sport N2) did it in 1:11,6

    Also, 0-200 of 996GT2 Mk2 is about 1s less than for 997TT.

Another aspect: NBR time of a 996TTS with x50 should be very comparable to 997TT's NBR time (both on standard tires)...

C&D magazine found the Tip 1.7 seconds faster to 160mph than the 6-spd.

Speaking of NBR times, here are some I found for comparison:

    997tt - 7:40 Motor Trend

997GT3 - 7:39/7:42 (both times listed as from mfr??)
    LP640 - 7:40
    Ford GT - 7:42
    Z06 - 7:42.9
    996GT2 - 7:46

Clearly the Turbo is extremely competitive and most likely the fastest in the hands of "actual" customers vs race car drivers.

IMO driver skill will determine which of the cars discussed will lap the fastest - they are all that close in performance. Buy whichever you prefer.

Re: 997 GT3 vs 997 Turbo track comparison!

Porsche seems to "manage" their NBR times amongst all of their sports cars. Neither Porsche or any auto magazine I know of, ever published a time for the 996 Turbo with X73 and X50. I suspect that car would lap somewhere in the high 7:40s on street tires.

It's important to determine what tires were on those cars.

Yes I guess about 7.45. I never timed my X50 at the Ring, but it overtook most GT3s last year - even while running PS2s.
