I bought a E63 AMG as a family car before I realized that this is not big enough, especially with two kids (second kid wasn't there yet). One reason I took the first Cayenne Turbo, although I hated it's design so much. Smiley Loved how it was driving though (for a SUV, had a ML55 AMG a couple of years earlier and the Cayenne was a completely different beast), even had the powerkit with 500 hp installed. Was so happy with the Cayenne that I even switched to the Turbo S when it was available. Unfortunately other SUV manufacturers kept up with Porsche and I chose a X5 M over the Cayenne Turbo S.

Long story short: If you have kids and need a fast ride, you cannot avoid/ignore high performance SUVs.

    Re: Ferrari SUV now inevitable

I am very very curious how sportscar manufacturers are going to address future ELV tech and especially ELV competition from "normal" manufacturers. With the right battery capacity, I wouldn't be surprised to see a ELV sedan or even SUV in a couple of years hitting 0-200 kph (125 mph) in under 10 seconds or faster. Gasoline engines with hybrid tech may be the future of sportscars but this tech will increase weight by at least 100 kg and ELVs are getting faster and faster. So I wonder where manufacturers like Ferrari or Lamborghini will be in 10 or more interesting, in 20 years from now on? I think that SUVs make sense for them since they allow to implement all kind of hybrid or ELV tech without caring too much about weight. Basically a first step into a full ELV future for all their models.

    Re: Ferrari SUV now inevitable

This could actually be good for the Cayenne: Porsche is charging top dollar for their SUV, but there used to be no real competition (except for range rover maybe). Now that other high class brands are also putting their SUVs in the market (bentley, lambo, ferrari), I think that the Cayenne could fill the slot in between them, just like it does in the sportscar segment. Then the prices for the Cayenne won't seem so ridiculous anymore. Nowadays they have to compete with mercedes and BMW, traditionally cheaper brands than Porsche.

    Re: Ferrari SUV now inevitable

Apparently financial man Sergio Marchionne has realized that Ferrari are not as healthy per se as people have long thought. It was a known fact that many of the overheads of Ferrari were hidden within the FIAT Group.

Now that Ferrari have gone public such practices are not allowed plus investors want increase in value. Entering the lucrative SUV market is a must for any manufacturer.

I don't think pioneers Porsche were fools to decide to make the Cayenne...to be followed by Bentley, Lamborghini, Aston Martin, Rolls Royce etc etc.

Porsche was totally right to build SUVs, right now the Macan is the only car in the Porsche range than interests me. Crossovers are the future, sedans sales are collapsing in th US. The big change is that now crossovers handle like sedans and use way less fuel than they used to, yet they are more practical, often AWD and safer since your driving position is higher. Luxury manufacturers cannot afford to  ignore this.

To be honest, I am only interested in (super)sportscars and...SUVs. Everything in-between has kind of become some blurry thing, not really caring about it. Smiley If my wife wouldn't care about that C63 Cab she wants, I would have never driven it. Also, while I am happy she gets it (better than a C43 Cab or a Cayenne S Diesel, right? Smiley), I have no particular interest in the car and I am not sleeplessly looking forward until she gets it. The GLC63 is a different story and it is a SUV...funny.

The world si beautiful because it is different. In my house no suv isi considered of any brand they have in my point of view no advantage, only negative elements : heavier, slower, drive worse, less fuel efficient, no advantage in bad conditions and not to mention the style which is personal.

i can not find 1 practical reason to Buy a suv in you live in normal places

Gotta agree here. Every garage should have at least a crossover be able to carry luggage or a piece of furniture from time to time. In fact if you only have 1 vehicle its the absolute best choice.

    Re: Ferrari SUV now inevitable

In my daily drive a sw i can fit almost the same as any suv with less problem since the car is lower. Pick ups and enormous suv like u have in the us makes me agree with u. But if you compare loading capacity with a normal european suv...maybe you have more space in a sw.

    Re: Ferrari SUV now inevitable

Well in the USA sw are extremely unpopular and pretty rare... I like the higher driving position of the SUV...

    Re: Ferrari SUV now inevitable

I also find SUV’s almost useless. Big, heavy, higher fuel consumption and drives much worse than every sedan/SW from the same brand. Seating position is also compromised for taller people, compared to a sedan/SW. Interestingly cargo space is sometimes bigger in the SW, also.

If I have to load furniture or something dirty one in a while, I would rent a commercial van for 20 euro and done with it. Not taking my 100k Cayenne for that job…

    Talking about EU.

Totally agree with you on that. Especially for families with 3+ kids, a proper SUV is needed Smiley

I try to keep one SUV and one sports car at all times. Sedans are just too boring to drive than sports cars and less practical than SUVs.

    Re: Ferrari SUV now inevitable

Let us agree that an SUV can be useful. Why does it need a Porsche or Ferrari badge?  That is a KIA job at best.

Why on earth does one need a fast or good handling SUV?  Must less a luxurious one if it is only practical to own. It is still a shit sandwich. I would not add expensive bread cheese or meat to a shit sandwich. I am not going to enjoy eating it.

It's okay to admit it is a dick swinging contest. Just say so. This is a car forum and that is what cars represent to some.

It is like asking why spend so much on a Rolex or Patek if a Seiko can tell the exact time.

It is about the "feel good" factor.

I have taken the Cayenne Turbo to multiple trips carrying wife and 3 kids and lots of luggages, and the drivings were enjoyable.  In retrospect, I will not want to drive any other vehicles.  Minivans can provide more space, but handling will be much worse.

If one can easily afford it, then buy whatever he or she likes.  Can't take the money away.Smiley

Because the Rolex will increase in value. I get that my Porsche habit also makes little sense but the am buying actual performance and driving enjoyment which is what the 911 is engineered to excel at. I also shop carefully and have not lost too much money.  For me though an SUV does not drive better than a sports car and will certainly not hold its value. It is a car appliance. I would buy a new Hyundai SUV because it is a practical choice only. Just a choice. I get it. The wonder of this world is that we get to make choices and observe others choices.  Cheers

    Re: Ferrari SUV now inevitable

Like many here SUV + sport car makes way more sense for us. Sedans are neither practical and can handle winter nor do they drive like a sport car. SUV and especially crossovers have become so good, they made sedans irrelevant. SUV also tend to be cheaper than luxury sedans leaving more money for the fun cars.

    Re: Ferrari SUV now inevitable

Once you get used to a SUV you will never go back to a sedan/wagon. Just that way.

    Re: Ferrari SUV now inevitable

Yeah, I think an SUV is a much better choice than a sedan or wagon, and will become an even better choice when they go EV.

The utility can't be ignored. You can carry way more stuff, the interior space is versatile, and the clearance is much better.

I personally wish someone would create a 3-row SUV in which 2nd and 3rd row seating was removable and reconfigurable.

Not really. They usually keep their value (if you are lucky and chose the right model) and considering inflation, they actually loose value as well. Only very very few watches actually increase in value, so collecting watches is not really something useful if you want to make money.

My father had a huge stamps collection (mainly very seldom stamps from Eastern Europe from the time before the iron wall fell) and the time and money he put into it, just isn't worth it. He enjoyed collecting but if I'd want to sell it now, I wouldn't get much in Germany. Maybe if I would go to these particular countries and look for collectors but I neither have the time nor the energy to do that. So I keep them around for my kids, they can do what they want with this stuff once I'm gone. Smiley Maybe they are lucky and it increases in value by then. I would have enjoyed a watch collection much more but my father was a simple and highly calculated man and the many positive memories I have about him are anyway priceless, so... Smiley
