    Flat-8 Could it work?

One of those odd thoughts you get in the middle of the night. Bear with me! VW developed the narrow angle VR6 engine for the Golf and Corrado because of the need for more power, more refinement, but also because of a lack of space under the hood for a normal V6. This design has gone on to be adapted and used in other VAG models in the group.

Could Porsche develop two narrow angle 4 cylinder blocks that are joined together horizontally to give a kind of flat-8 that would look like a flattened Southern Cross/St Andrew's Cross if viewed from behind.

The engine in theory would be marginally longer than the flat-6 but not by much, as the cylinders would overlap as they do in the VR6. The engine would be taller, but again not by much because the angle would be agan something like 15 degrees as in the VR6. Cylinder heads and valve gear trains would be shared as in the VR6.

Any engineers care to speculate if this could be a solution to the need for more power for the 911?

    Re: Flat-8 Could it work?

Does this configuration address the problem of extra weight further back from the rear axle? A flat 10 would makes the rear engine seem even more weird.

Looks like the Boxster would be getting the extra cylinders if any are added.

Would be very nice if they could do, and are thinking of doing something like what you suggest.

Hey! How about keeping the Carrera body and just stuffing an 8 cylinder mid-engine in it?

    Re: Flat-8 Could it work?

The most famous engine of this type is the Porsche air-cooled flat-8 engine introduced in a 1,5 L version for Formula 1 that grew up to a 3 L version used in the Porsche 908 - but it is a 'normal' flat 8 not the type you describe.

    Re: Flat-8 Could it work?

    If you're day dreaming...why not the 917 Flat - 12 engine

Yes it would. The engine would be shorter than a normal flat-8 because of cylinder overlap.

Wow. Sounds good to me. Probably will never actually happen though for reasons too secret for us to know.

    Re: Flat-8 Could it work?

It would be a sort of X. Not impossible but a lot of cooling and lubrication issues to work out.

    Agree

Agree but VAG seem to have resolved their issues on cooling and lubrication with the VR6 and W12 engines.

    Re: Agree

Yes but it took them ages and they weren't trying to overcome the flat layout either

    Re: Agree

Well a flat 6 is really just a 180 degree V6. If you staggered two 170(ish) degree V4's (so on one bank the cylinders were the high side lying above and in between the "flat" cylinders & the other bank being the bottom "flat" side) you could probably make an engine that was actually as short as a flat 6. I'm not an engineer, I don't even play one on TV, but I would hate to try and work out the crank and cams for that! Would be VERY cool though.
