997 GT3 RS weight by Andreas Preuninger...
997 GT3 RS weight by Andreas Preuninger...
Exce11ence magazine had an interesting question for Andreas Preuninger:
(Q) "What does the new RS weigh - and why doesn't it save more weight?"
(A) "Our customers ask about weight. Our customers think the car is much heavier at its published weight of 1375kg (3031 pounds). We quote the GT3 RS in dry weight specifications at 1170kg (2579 pounds) without fuel, coolant, or oil. But as is carries 90 litres of petrol at 70kg (154 pounds), 30 litres of coolant is another 30kg (66 pounds) of weight. There is 15 litres of oil for 11kg (24.25 pounds), 2kg (4.4 pounds) of hydraulic fluid, 7 litres, or 7kg of windshield washing fluid, and, finally, the air-conditioning and its 20 litres of refrigerant. The A/C adds 20kg (44 pounds). So when we take out all liquid weights from the GT3, it is only 1250kg (2755 pounds), 80kg (176 pounds) more than the RS. The old 996 GT3 weighed 1360kg (2998 pounds) without air-conditioning - and we think the A/C makes you a safer driver.
You know, at Porsche, one of our biggest concerns is weight. Even with its engine performance, the car is surprisingly fuel efficient. The GT3 averages below 10 litre / 100km at 120km/h (23.5mpg at 75mph). To get the same efficiency, you have to choose a Golf GTi! But here we have built a car that will drive 300km/h with the air-conditioning on! The RS and GT3 also must be as safe as normal Carrera models. We won't put our customers at risk. Front impact standards for the 996 were 54km/h (34mph). The 997 must accept a 64km/h (40mph) front crash. The difference is enormous."
(Thanks to Exce11ence!)
Cheers,
