    Brake squeal after 2500 miles

    Within the last week I have developed some brake squeal from the ceramics. Never happened once in the first 4 mos./2500 miles. The car was not affected by the initial brake workshop campaign. Only happens with light touch at very low speeds. Temps have been the lowest since car arrived, but I don't know if that has anything to do with it. Anybody else with PCCB notice any squeal after initial silence?

    Sounds like your brake pads may have become "glazed" due to "over-civilized" use of the brakes.

    The cure would be to get out on traffic-free, cop-free highway and to brake hard several times from as high a speed as you want to go to, to wear off the glazed surface.

    This will also help shorten the braking distance in case you ever really need to do an emergency stop.

    Just be sure the ceramics are brought up to normal temp before doing these quick stops.

    I have 5500 miles on my tt with PCCB and no noise whatsoever. My wife has never felt I was an "overly civilized" braker, however.

    Yap, put a thermocouple on each rotor and stop often to take the temp of the ceramic before the quick stop

    I read in "Excellence" that it's a characteristic of PCCBs. Don't get too worried.

    Thanks for the input, guys. I wouldn't say I've been too civilized with these brakes, but I'll try to "clean off" the pads next time out.

    I know there is some issue with squeal with the older PCCBs but I was hoping that has been remedied. I'm not worried about the performance, it's just that I hate the fingernails on blackboard piercing noise. Really irritating.

    Hey, don't go thinking that my reference to "over-civilzed" braking was in any way meant to be criticism or a comment on your driving.
    I just noticed the low mileage you quoted and inferred that you have just broken in the car, which for a lot of drivers would imply that they have been treating their car kindly. Careful use of the throttle generally results in lighter use of the brakes, which can result in glazed brake pads.

    Really varies by car, mileage, driving style, etc...

    Had two new 996TTS (w/PCCB 2.0); first was silent until 10K mis; then squeaking began and was not solvable despite various DIY approaches (as fritz suggests above)...trade-in @12K mis. Second copy was perfectly silent during 5K mis I had it before trade-in.

    Had two new 997TT w/PCCB 3.0....both Jul06 build; first was initially quiet during 2K mis of aggressive use, but its VIN was subject to the PCCB recall campaign; PCCB adjustment was done per recall and subsequently PCCB began an annoying squeak/screech in varying conds (both urban and mtn twisties)...traded-in after some 3K mis...

    Second 997TT PCCB was perfectly quiet (and not subject to recall); drove it some 3K mis before trade-in.

    Have had several F CCM cars; all quiet during similar use durations/driving styles, but know of owners w/one-off expces as well....

    Net, net....some steel/composite brakes (e.g., 65's) have squeak issues as well; but find pedal feel/ability to "titrate" braking/fade resistance/lack of brake dust/caliper optics of PCCB/CCM to be a non-negotiable must-have if one appreciates nuances of latest/greatest auto technologies....

    I think all large disced cars are prone to it my CTT with power kit brakes squeal from time to time although it may be more of a dust issue which you mont get with PCCB.

    Not to hijack Ken's thread but we've all read a ton of threads on "proper break in" for new cars. Of course, there are as many opinions on this as you could possibly imagine.

    How about the brakes? Particularly PCCB's. Is there a "proper" way to break these in? Easy does it for a while, or just start thrashing?!

    Quoting the following from Brembo, which I assume would apply to Porsche brakes as well:

    "For optimum performance a bedding procedure should be carried out.

    While the vehicle is stationary, pump the brakes to ensure a firm pedal.

    Drive the vehicle cautiously to test fit and function. The brakes should be smooth with no vibration, judder, etc.

    Drive the vehicle in a remote area and perform at least 30 brake applications of 3 seconds duration. Use light to medium deceleration with varying starting speeds. Leave at least a 1/2 mile between each brake application. The purpose of this procedure is to gradually increase the temperature in the components without inducing thermal shock, and to mate the brake pad and disc friction surfaces.

    After repeated stops, drive the vehicle for several miles with little or no braking in order to adequately cool the components.

    After the above process is completed the system is ready for normal use. When the system achieves elevated temperatures for the first time, a slight increase in pedal travel and effort may occur. After this first 'fade' and proper cooling, the system will maintain its optimum performance at all temperatures."
