Slatty, Wingy, Venty: Color for De-emphasization

Just trying to figure out which color to maybe get. I'd like to de-emphasize all the stuff going on on the car's exterior so I made this comparision. Just sharing, FWIW.

Re: Slatty, Wingy, Venty: Color for De-emphasization

Color in first pics is shining !!

Re: Slatty, Wingy, Venty: Color for De-emphasization

Meteor of the two you displayed. Darker colors will be more under the radar as far as all the 'slats, etc' are concerned.

Re: Slatty, Wingy, Venty: Color for De-emphasization

If it were me, I would definitely go for Black, Basalt Black or Atlas Grey.

The styling of the 997TT is certainly not clean and simple IMO. It's very ornate (+ve view) or too fussy (-ve view). I think the best way to mask some of this 'so-called over-styling' is to pick a very, very dark colour so that it hides the intakes, holes, scoops, panel gaps etc.

More generally, from a 'car image' perspective, I think a very dark 997TT looks really 'menacing'. IMO some of this effect is simply lost when a lighter colour is chosen.

For my 997S, there was only one colour in the end: GT Silver.

If I were to chose a 997TT (theoretically), it would probably be Basalt Black

    Just my 2 cents....

(BTW, I said "theoretically", because I wouldn't trade up from a 997S to a 997TT. If/when I trade up, it would be to a Lamborghini Gallardo/Murcielago or whichever Ferrari is on sale at that time).

Here's a comp, can't find any darker ones to compare. Interesting to see side by side in silver too.

Re: Slatty, Wingy, Venty: Color for De-emphasization

I went with Slate for that reason. In dark colors there's less contrast between the paint and the black air inlets and exhaust vents. For me it pulled the car together.

I confess I obsessed too much over the color when ordering. Since the car's arrived, I've enjoyed driving it so much I wouldn't even care if it had that white-out treatment that's floating around the forums.

Re: Slatty, Wingy, Venty: Color for De-emphasizati

The side by side pics confirm just how busy and (for me) disappointing the design of the Turbo is. The basic design is so much cleaner and more beautiful in comparison. I am planning on guards red Turbo and boy do the vents, slats, holes, scoops stand out with this color.

The "accessories" stand out in all colors, just to different degrees, therefore my (humble) opinion is that you should just pick the color you like because that's what one would "notice" the most in the long run.

I also think that for lighter colors (silver, red, yellow, etc.), painting the rocker panel and FRONT lip car-body color (not rear IMO, the rear lip has yet another vent hole that stands out when you paint it body color) makes the car looks less busy.

BTW and off-topic: What's your opinion re. the much rumoured body change? Will it happen for the turbo this summer? I can't decide whether to order now or wait until July 2007 for 2008 car. Keep in mind there will be most likely a price increase if we are to wait for 2008.

I just thought of this this AM. If you plan to keep the car for three years it doesn't matter if the facelift comes out in one year or in two years, the depreciation will still hit you and you'll love your car anyway. Just order the car and don't bother to wait because waiting is more painful than the facelift depreciation if you plan to keep the car.

Re: Slatty, Wingy, Venty: Color for De-emphasizati

    Hello MMD,

I am buying the car and plan to keep it 4 plus years. Not worrying about depreciation at all, just wanting to wait if there are going to be changes soon (I know, not all of us agrees that rear change is necessarily a plus.). Judging from your sheer number of posts , I figure you must have some idea re. whether this body change will happen this summer. If it is THIS (2007) summer, I'll wait. If it happens the following (2008) summer, I will not; 1 1/2 year is too much waiting.

No! I'm just an complete amateur with a Rennteam habit and a job which is either boredom or terror. Most of the stuff is me just reiterating what I learned from the smarter real car guys here.

I'm just thinking we're all gonna own outdated cars more sooner than later and there's always something "better" to wait for.

Actually, it might be a very good idea to wait for the DSG to show up in the Turbo. Almost as big a deal as, in the past, holding off on the 996 while waiting for the 997.

Re: Slatty, Wingy, Venty: Color for De-emphasizati

Nothing much new to add, but here's the color analysis:

If you want to make all the busy-ness of the turbo disappear, go Black, Atlas or Midnight.

If you can handle some visuals, go with Meteor.

If you want a bit lighter, go GT Silver.

Each step forward in lightness will give you more visuals. It's your call. Stealth, or not. Tough call.

I love Meteor, if I was into the Grey thing. If I wanted silver, GT Silver for sure.

But I'm a Guards guy, and to me, ANY Porsche in Guards is a good thing.

What! If this is how I felt about a car I wouldn't spend $40k, let alone $140k. Why would you buy a car you don't like?

Re: Slatty, Wingy, Venty: Color for De-emphasizati

There is the look, and then there is the perfomance. I (and I would think most of us) would give more weight to the latter, as overall appearance is close enough between the 2 versions of the 997.

Reading my post again, I could see why you might think I "don't like" the Turbo (although I never wrote that). Please allow me to clarify: I am "disappointed" because in comparison the NA 997 looks "better." Keep in mind we are now really into nit picking territory as far as appearance is concerned. Overall, I would pick the Turbo in a heart beat. And will be this coming June/July. (Had 2006 Guards Red NA 997 that was totaled a couple of months ago.)

    Can,
Maybe I read more into your post than was intended. Last sentence came as a surprise after reading the first two.
Hope you enjoy your new ride, and sorry to hear about your other car. Hope everybody fared as well as you.

Re: Slatty, Wingy, Venty: Color for De-emphasizati

That is why I will stick to my 997S Cab. The turbo is just too busy.

The car is hard to fall in love with if you're a less-is-more, "minimalist" kind of person.

I like certain aspects of my current car (997S) and just "overlook" the parts I am dissatisfied with.

I'm planning to trade up and I gotta admit I'm worried that the Turbo wing is gonna be a hard one to get used to.

I'm wondering about modifying the TT and putting a 997 rear deck on with the retractible spoiler for when I actually need the stability in a 140mph+ police chase.

LOL, not going to admit to it. I would never want to be a member of any group which would have ME as a member.
