    Tire Chains

Has anyone purchased snow chains for their 911S with the 295/30 - ZR19's on the rear? What are the prices like and is Porsche the only one making chains for that wheel/tire size?

    Thanks.

    Jim

    Re: Tire Chains

I will start by talking to either the Performance Tires guys or my Porsche dealer on that one. I'd like a set of cable chains just to be legal in a few situations.

    Re: Tire Chains

Tire chains for people well-off enough to own a Porsche come in a huge box along with a Jeep CJ-7...

You need a winter beater!!! Driving a Porsche in chain-weather is like towing a boat with a motorcycle...

    Re: Tire Chains

They are actually much fun to drive in the snow! But, if I have to go over a particular mountain pass in the winter I want to be able to point to the trunk and say, "chains are in the trunk."

    Re: Tire Chains

If I had to do a lot of serious winter driving, I'd get a 4wd SUV or CUV. It just happens that if I have to head north during the winter, I'd prefer not to leave my 911S at home. Hence the desire to get some chains. Also, I'd like to be prepared by having them in the trunk if I were heading out to Arizona during the winter. They get snow in the northern part, around Flagstaff, and chains are required by the state police - they set up road blocks to stop all cars and trucks without chains.

I checked with my dealer, and they are asking $600 for a set that fits the 295/30 -ZR19's on the rear. And they can't seem to get them quickly, so I was curious as to whether they were available elsewhere or if some other manufacturer had a set that would fit and not damage the body work, undercarriage, or rear suspension components.

I couldn't find much after doing an internet search. I thought someone on this site had gotten chains or investigated getting them in the last year - the winter of 2005/06 so that's why I made the post.

Jim, You might be thinking of the thread I had going for a while regarding chains. My dealer ended up giving me a free set for my 19"s (2006 997). Yes, they generally sell them for around $600 but it was a good will gesture on their behalf because they had made a few boo-boos with my few months old then car. I, like you, really only wanted them to get me out of a bad situation that could easily turn into a worse situation.

The scenario at that time was that I was planning a drive out to Las Vegas. There was a small storm on the long range weather outlook. A storm that wouldn't impact the trip to Vegas but might cause some problems on the way back. I didn't want to get stuck between exits in Utah. The chains would hopefully get me to the nearest exit and then too a hotel for the night.

Unfortunately I never got to take my car on that trip. We ended up buying air tickets a few days before we were supposed to leave because my dealer "forgot" to do order a part for my car until it was too late for them to get them in time. (Hence the freebies on the chains. I raised hell and they wanted to quiet me down.)

BTW, the chains are new sitting in my garage next to the 997 which is under its cover waiting for the nice days of spring to arrive.

Jim, I should have added this to the post I just made. A fellow Rennteamer sent this link to me in a private message. Its a URL for chains he recommended:

I didn't investigate these very much though.

    Puffy,

Thanks for the refresher on your experience with the chains and for the link to the other source.

    Re: Tire Chains

yes i got rope chains for the 997s. just tried them once to see if they fit well, but never tried them on snow. they're like autosock, but a different brand. trey are spanish. the official size are 285/40/19 i think, but they fit perfect. they are a bit difficult to fit cause of the lack of space between tire and car, but you can get them in pretty good.
they cost me 84 Euro .

    Re: Tire Chains

I decided to order a set from my dealer. They will probably take a few weeks to get here, but I don't really need them for local trips, only as a safety measure if I get caught in a storm while traveling on longer trips during the winter months.
