    GT3RS getting 3.8l motor for 2008

My contact at local Porsche Dealership here in Palm Springs, CA mentioned the 08' run of RS' will get a 3.8l version of the current 3.6. Obviously it would not be an S with Powerkit, but the real deal motor only bigger. Anyone else hear similar news?

    Re: GT3RS getting 3.8l motor for 2008

Your contact is wrong. There will no change for 08 RS if they do make it.

    Re: GT3RS getting 3.8l motor for 2008

The GT3/GT3 RS/TT engines are all derived from the same 3.6L unit. It has a separate dry sump. The 3.8L unit in the Carrera is an integrated dry sump. It's still a wet sump. To re-engineer this for GT3 purposes (i.e. avoiding oil starvation during track use with slick tyres) with a true dry sump would be a major re-design and would be very costly. Whoever told you it would be a 3.8L version is not even speculating. He/she is simply talking nonsense.

    Re: GT3RS getting 3.8l motor for 2008

    Not sure this is nonsense.
I think the 3.8l dry sump already exists in competition version

    Re: GT3RS getting 3.8l motor for 2008

indeed the RSR has the 3.8L engine...

    Re: GT3RS getting 3.8l motor for 2008

Sure, but if the 997 GT3 RSR is relevant to this question, why then do the 997 GT3 and 997 GT3 RS not also share the same unit? After all (if I'm correct), the GT3 RS is the homologation model for the 997 GT3 RSR.

I think it's perhaps safer to assume that the 997 GT3 RSR exists the way it does precisely because of the specific rules that it was made to comply with.

Anyway, let's see. Maybe you're right and I will have to eat my words

    Re: GT3RS getting 3.8l motor for 2008

The RSR runs a 3.8ltr because it can...

Porsche puts a midly tweeked (from the 996GT3) 3.6ltr engine in the 997GT3 beacuse it's cheaper and they can get away with it.

Would it be difficult to put different P&C's in the existing GT3 engine to get 3.8ltr? No, I believe the stroke is the same, just different parts (& probably heads etc.) and it would be quite simple. Porsche just always seems to hold something back, ready to be brought out if/when needed.

There are lots of 4+ litre GT3 based flat 6's running around the worlds racetracks!

    Re: GT3RS getting 3.8l motor for 2008

based on displacement increase alone (close to 6%) the bump from a 3.6 ltr GT3 engine to a 3.8 would make a 440HP(ish) engine. Add direct injection and you could have something in the 450-460HP range fairly easily.

I don't see this in '08 but it could easily be the 998 GT3... who knows...

    Re: GT3RS getting 3.8l motor for 2008

The RSR's 3.8 is derived from the 3.6 by a simple bore only, no stroke added. The current Carrera 3.8 is not the same as the RSR 3.8. Porsche bored the 3.6 to a 3.8 in the RSR because of the rule changes. I seriously doubt they would put a race version 3.8 (please read bored 3.6) in a production car but I am going to talk to my dealer just in case!

    Re: GT3RS getting 3.8l motor for 2008

    keep dreaming.
    won't happen.

    Re: GT3RS getting 3.8l motor for 2008

My guess is that they'll make a 997 GT3 RSR for the road with 3.8L motor at the end of the 997 run around 2009 or 2010 (just before 998 intro) to squeeze some more sales from the 997. It will be fast & expensive. The 998GT3 will be faster and less money.

This is typical Porsche behavior (Turbo S, etc.)...

    Re: GT3RS getting 3.8l motor for 2008

GT3 and Turbo engines are based on the 1998 GT1 engine with the 993 crankcase and the same bore x stroke figures.

    The 3.6 GT3 figures are 100x76,4 mm.
The 3.8 GT3 RSR figures are 102x76,4 mm.
Some tuners as Ruf, Sportech or RS Tuning already offers 3.8 GT3 engines with 102 mm bore.
It would not be difficult and expensive for Porsche to offer it as it has already been tested in last season 996 GT3 RSR (most of the Le Mans cars had 3.8 engines)

Absolutely. But then again why bother? All the GT3 RS are already spoken for...

    Re: GT3RS getting 3.8l motor for 2008

Porsche use the 3.8 litre engine for racing and although bhp increases are modest the torque shows a good improvement. The reason the don't use it for the road going GT3/GT3 RS is that they are concerned about reliability for higher mileage road cars. I asked the question and that was the reply.

    Re: GT3RS getting 3.8l motor for 2008

Yes, at those revs (8,400rpm), any additional mass causes more wear on the moving parts...
