Well, since new M3 will have 426hp the difference in speed is normal IMO.
It should be an interesting match-up against your R8
What match-up. The M3 should have the edge on the R8, for much less money.

Why? Because it will weight 200lbs more than the e46 and has a front engine?

The Audi will likely come in quite heavier with similar horsepower. As we all know, weight kills performance.
Additonally, the Audi will likely suffer some kind of parasitic HP loss through the additional gear diff. Say it only loses 10 HP because of an advanced AWD system. Add the 6 HP less BHP the engine achieves and add an additional 200 lbs.
So, the way I see it, the Audi would likely come in at 200 lbs heavier and 16-20 hp less which should give the M the advantage. (Unless I missed something and the Audi will come in weighing less, making more BHP and priced lower.)
Add an additional $25k for the Audi and I have my answer.

Heavier? The R8 weighs in at 1560 kg. The M3 will tip the scales at close to 1700 kg. How is the Audi heavier? Then factor in better aerodynamics and there you go.
