    HomeLink Operation Advice Please

I am due to receive my new C4S coupe any day now

I have ordered it with Homelink, and I am getting an automotic garage and gate opener installed.

Can anyone tell me if all automatic garage doors use the same frequencies and work with Homelink or if there is something I need to look for (or buy additionally) to make it work?

    Is setting it up intuitive?

    Thanks in advance.

LOL! I love it. That's another way of asking "Do I REALLY HAVE to read the manual?"

Many congrats BTW. You're gonna love your car!

    Re: HomeLink Operation Advice Please

first congrats...i think the newer garage/gate opener use a " rolling code "...the home link should work great, just follow the simple instructions in the om....have fun

    Re: HomeLink Operation Advice Please

It's pretty simple if you read the manual but its a bit tricky getting the Homelink to work with a rolling code setup. Need two people to set that one. One to hold the button in the car and one to hold the button on the garage opener.

    Re: HomeLink Operation Advice Please

I found the Porsche manual to be only half the story. For the other half, look at the Homelink website. It contains further instructions needed. (I'd explicitly set out all the necessary steps for you, but I honestly just don't remember them anymore.)

    Re: HomeLink Operation Advice Please

Setting your homelink involves possibly two steps.

The first step is to let your P-car learn what frequency and modulation to transmit on. This is done by, in essence, having your P-car's home link transmitter clone your handheld transmitter. If your garage door opener is an older unit that does not using "rolling codes" then, I believe, you are done. The button that you programmed above your rearview mirror will open and close your garage door.

If your garage door opener is a "newer" unit that uses rolling codes then you still have to go through the first step above (having your homelink clone your handheld unit) but now you have to climb on a ladder and push the "program or learn" button on the opener itself while then pressing the programmed homelink button in your car. This then synchronizes the rolling codes between the homelink and the garage door opener.

Once you get it done its not that hard! Its doing it the first time that can be confusing. Caution, I have inadvertantly pushed the "program or learn" button in such a way on my garage door opener that it erased its memory of all of the openers it knew about. This caused me to reteach all of my cars homelinks and even the extra handheld units I have.

    Good luck!

    Re: HomeLink Operation Advice Please

The rolling code is beyond me! I can set it (and did) for my Audi A6, but I couldn't for my new 997. The good news is I have a 2 car garage and the 997 is parked behind the door w/o the rolling code. If it breaks...I am up the creek.

    Good luck & Cheers,

    Kenny S

    Re: HomeLink Operation Advice Please

Here is something I have not tested. Does the homelink work in our P-cars with out a key in the ignition? The homelink in one of my other cars opens or closes the garage without the ignition on. I don't like that! A scenario I can see would be that I leave that car in the driveway, someone breaks into it and without having to hotwire the car can open my garage. Not good in my opinion! My other car needs the ignition on to activate the homelink (ie., powered by the key ignition) I will have to check this in the spring.

    Re: HomeLink Operation Advice Please

Kind of a PITA with modern openers. Took two people. Luckily I had the installer do it for me, he just told me what buttons to press. I'd just do it with the installer when he comes.

The P-car needs the ignition on unlike my other cars where Homelink is always powered.

I have an old Genie (it's at least 7 years old) with rolling code and one person can program. The switch on the door opener motor just needs to be pushed once for the red light to come on and then you have I think 30 seconds to push the appropriate buttons in the car - not easy but it can be done.

JH: Thanks for the info on that. Have you been driving your P-car? I'm going to wait now until a good amount of the sand thats been thrown on the roads is either swept up or is driven onto the shoulder.

I got out for about a 50 mile drive Sunday - the biggest problem is the low clearance on the streets that still have ice remnants. The car is so dirty too that I thought I'd try to wash it but my hoses are still frozen - Spring can't come soon enough.
