Nitrogen Fill for Tires vs. Compressed Air

Any thoughts? I was just at the dealer and they were pushing to fill tire with Nitrogen instead of compressed air. Seamed like one of the audiophile tweeks that no one can hear except the animals in the house.

There was an extensive discussion on this topic earlier on the 997 turbo board. Heres you link hope this helps

There were also other threads on the various boards...just search nitrogen

Re: Nitrogen Fill for Tires vs. Compressed Air

thanks for the search link but that thread really didn't get at my question. Is there really any value to this nitrogen fill or is it just hype unless in extreme environments like the track where 1lb difference can mean tenths of a second on laps in which you are going to reap the proceeds of a 1st place finish?

Re: Nitrogen Fill for Tires vs. Compressed Air

Aside from any performance benefits, nitrogen contains ZERO moisture, unlike compressed air. My Dealer has told me that many Tire Pressure Monitor sensors will corrode and fail over time due to the effects of the moisture in compressed air. This can not happen with nitrogen.

Re: Nitrogen Fill for Tires vs. Compressed Air

hmm, you would think that Porsche would use materials designed for a compressed air environment or else ship the cars with the nitrogen filled tires.

I'm thinking your dealer is a good salesman.

Re: Nitrogen Fill for Tires vs. Compressed Air

Another benefit to the Nitrogen is that it will retain pressure for a longer period of time and through larger temperature fluctuations. With compressed air, their will be more leakage through time, than Nitrogen filled tires will have (larger molecules...).

Re: Nitrogen Fill for Tires vs. Compressed Air

Hey, when my car was new I waxed it every day (it seemed) and I would have wanted nitrogen in the tires. Now almost two years later (a 997S, sorry not a TT) it sits in the garage dirty and I could care less that there's plain ol' air in the tires.

BTW, last I checked air is 70% nitrogen.

Oh, I'm not neglecting the car (I guarantee the tire pressures are correct, and there's no dings in the doors) I'm just not freekin' hormonally elevated about every detail anymore... .

Re: Nitrogen Fill for Tires vs. Compressed Air

Air 78% nitrogen 21% oxygen the rest CO2 and inert gases.

The 997 X51 is about 79% of the Turbo's power, but look how much faster the Turbo is .

Regarding Oxygen corroding TPMS units: last time I read about them the TPMS units MUST be replaced when the battery wears out. IOW, the battery is molded into the unit and can't be changed. The O2 ( and moisture accumulation) is no threat to the longevity of TPMS units because they have no longevity.

Nitrogen leaks out more slowly. So if you get nitrogen-filled tires the only advantage I'm interested in is having to check tire pressures maybe half as many times.

This is a better link for your question.

Personally, I am convinced that you can feel a difference. The car handles more precise with Nitrogen filled tires, particularly driven at high speeds on the Autobahn.

Re: Nitrogen Fill for Tires vs. Compressed Air

Ingersoll Rand Industrial Technologies sells a Nitrogen Generator system to fill tires with pure Nitrogen. Retailing between $5,300 and $12,500 (depending on capacity), the system is designed for commercial and professional applications, like tire shops and race teams. It works by filtering ambient air through a semi-permeable membrane to separate Nitrogen from ambient air. There are no tanks of liquid Nitrogen required.

Ingersoll Rand claims that there are several distinct advantages to filling your tires with Nitrogen:

    * Better air pressure retention -- Nitrogen doesn't seep out through the tire walls like Oxygen can, so tires remain fully inflated longer.
    * Enhanced fuel economy -- Nitrogen dissipates heat faster than air, and heat causes rolling resistance. "Maintaining tire pressure can boost fuel economy by as much as 6 percent."
    * Longer tread life -- Filling your tires with pure Nitrogen makes tires run cooler, which will reduce tire failure. It also prevents oxidation, which can cause tread separation and belt failure. Since Nitrogen doesn't carry moisture, it won't cause rust on the inside of rims and valve stems.
    * Slow chemical aging -- "Filling a tire with Nitrogen also significantly slows the chemical aging process of the tire's rubber components."

Re: Nitrogen Fill for Tires vs. Compressed Air

    Nitrogen in a driver's car's tires is a hoax.

For race cars, museum cars, cars with eedeeit drivers who won't check their tire pressures, PURE magnesium wheels (LOL), it sounds plausible.

Oh, and don't forget to return to the dealer or repair shop REGULARLY to use ONLY nitrogen from now on. They might find something wrong with your car while they're adding nitrogen.

There was a big hype about it in Germany a couple of years ago but it stopped. The advantages are there but not really important if you have TPMS. I check my tire pressure every week anyway, so nitrogen is actually a waste of money. It can't hurt though. Check our archives, we discussed this before.

Re: Nitrogen Fill for Tires vs. Compressed Air

The reason for using nitrogen over compressed air is that nitrogen gas is completely dry. This results in more stable and uniform hot and cold tire pressures. The partial pressure of the water vapor is the bad actor in the use of compressed air. Nitrogen is also relatively inert at the temperatures achieved in this application. Also appropriate for use in this application is CO2 which has the added benefit of being more easily stored and transported.
