Questions to the Spaniards of Rennteam

This question is for the Spaniards on this board.
I may have to relocate to Madrid for my work for several years and if this is the case, I will need to take a decision on what to do with my C2S.
Would you recommend selling it or bringing it with me?
    My concerns:
    - I have -20mm (no offense to the roads)
    - I do not speak the language (and therefore will be more difficult to find my way around to park etc)
    - I will live in the city center
    - I will have a company car
    - I will have no clue where to drive to have fun over week-ends
    Any input is welcome

Ask AlexCC18, he lives in Madrid. As for Spanish, try Pimsleur, that will give you at least some basics.

Re: Questions to the Spaniards of Rennteam

    Jeannot,

I live in between London and Spain but Im originally from Madrid.

1 - The roads are fine some better some worst as in any country but you are moving to Madrid in 2007 not 1949. -20mm should not be an issue, ask carlosfromSpain, he's got a -20mm. Advice, get a radar detector if you don't have one, again Spain 2007 is very different than Spain a few years back.

2 - Although I would be the first one to tell you that the level of english in Spain is not as high as it should be, it is fine to help you get around. Parking is called Parking in Spain. We have many parkings across Madrid, all clearly signed with a P for parking....

3 - Do you have a Nav? If you do, you should have no issues getting around.

4 - I would suggest you keep the car and enjoy your weekends travelling across Spain. There are many great places where you can go even around Madrid and I am sure you will enjoy the roadtrip much more in your C2.

Re: Questions to the Spaniards of Rennteam

Forgot to mention, i would be happy to give you ideas for roadtrips or what to do in Madrid.

Re: Questions to the Spaniards of Rennteam

    Many Thanks!

2 - well, you know what I mean, sometimes it is better to look for P sign but to follow local advice. I'd be the total ([beep]) foreigner lost or about to be, driving his Porsche... Hum hum.

    3 - yes, I have the nav.

4 - any nice roads around Madrid just worth driving for the sake of driving?

I am sure I'll ask you for ideas once there :-)

Re: Questions to the Spaniards of Rennteam

    Hi Jeannot,

I don't live near Madrid but here is my two cents:

You won't have a problem with the roads, they are likely better than the ones in London. In my area they certainly are and enjoy my -20mm every minute and take it everywere.

I suggest underground parking always, and should all be indicated in the navigator o you can get a TomTom. Either way a navigator is a must anyway if you don't the city until you get the hand of it.

Just make sure you have a private parking space.

The more reason to bring the C2, company cars are booring, you will need to vent on the weekends

You have plenty of secondary roads in the outside of the city, in the Sierra Madrileña, to enjoy. And you can visit other cities.

Re: Questions to the Spaniards of Rennteam

    Hi Jeannot

I think Carlos has already answered you. Just be aware about so many speed bumps (not always indicated...)at least in Barcelona. Anyway, you should keep your car, enjoy lots of secondary roads and why not, trackdays.

Hello jeannot !, sorry for the little delay, but my dosis of rennteam are reduced, because of the exams

I think you wont have too many problems with the -20mm suspension, except when entering some subterranean parkings, and may be some roads in "construction" , I say this, because Madrid is from a year or two a city surrounded by new constructions projects, specially new roads, motorways etc....Anyway, things have been much worse than now (specially some months back, due to the traffic of this roads(in production) and because of the poor situation of them....In a few months, the most important constructions of roads etc, will be finally finished, so if you come in the next months that will be an extra point for you, because you have not suffered all the traffic jams, and very poor conditions of the roads that where in process of construction .....

Madrid is a GREAT city, I come from Mallorca, and have been living here for some years now(studying here), and its a very big city, lots of places to go (I would say its unlimited , the night life is just also amazing, madrilian food and generally spanish food as you have already heard(I hope ) is just the best of the best !! , there are lots of GREAT restaurants, very typical spanish restaurants, and not necessary very expensive!!......

Regarding the language, spanish is not that hard, in fact I can say you all the people(specially some friends that have come to live here for a year or more due to their studies, they have learned a very high level of spanish, without knowing a thing)...Anyway I could give you some extra teaching classes, if the situation is required!

So well roads in madrid are getting re-constructed(those that where very deteriorated), and like I said in a "little"period of time they will be finished...Lots of subterranean tunnnels have also been constructed in the center of madrid, another hard time for all of us, while they have been in period of construction ....

If you are going to live in the city center, with a company car, I would highly bring the Carrera S here , specially for the weekends, exploring the outsides of madrid, like Carlos said la Sierra Madrileña, the mountains roads, the area of Buitrago de Loyoza(roads full of curves ), there are so many places I havent drived !!!!

The city center, as you can imagine, is probably the best place to live, also its one of the moest expensive areas, lots of "old" buildings that have been reconstructed and turned into new apartments, but also lots of old buildings, that still maitain their glamour

The situation here in Spain, and specially in Madrid and Barcelona, regarding driving fines, police radars etc, is not that nice, specially since we adopted the "new"(to us), driving license by points, every driver has literally taked things more easy, everyone drive more slowly, you get more nervious etc etc etc , but anyway, with the time, I think people have returned to their traditions, and everyone in here drives like a maniac, too frenetic driving, too much people dont know how to drive , but anyways this happens in all cities

There is also the track , Jarama circuit, located a few minutes outside of the center, where you can go and have some fun....There are two official porsche dealers (one in avenida burgos, which will be more near your home, well future home if you come here and finally live in the center). And the other one, in Majadahonda (which is where I more or less live),and this one is the dealer we go , located about 10-15mins outside of the city center...Also a very nice place to live!!

Dont worry for parking signs!!!, the city center is just FULL of them !!!!, in the most important streets, you will hardly find a space to park your car, and even less , one suitable for the carrera S ...

Oh one more things, there has been lots of negative feedback of restaurants here in Madrid with vallet service, lots of porsche's have been stolen...Also there are some organisations, specialised in the thief of luxury cars, but again this is more or less something that is in all places...

Well I think that's it for now , if you have more questions, just ask !

Oh btw!!!, if you like football!!, oh well, sorry.....If you LOVE football and like Real Madrid, this is your city!!!

Re: Questions to the Spaniards of Rennteam

Sorry to highjack this thread slightly. I am off to Barcelona in 3 weeks for a conference. Which Porsche dealer should I go to? I want to buy the Porsche pram/stroller which is not available here but available in Spain according to their website.

Re: Questions to the Spaniards of Rennteam

Carlos, Almeras, Alex, Thank you very much for the information.
I guess I will do a discovery trip to Madrid soon. I have been in Madrid before, but only with the 'tourists eyes'. It is good to know that keeping the car, even only for week-end, will be fun...I will have 2 excuses to go in the countryside. 1) drive & 2) discover (Not sure about the order ).
Will keep you posted on the development. It's more a matter of when than if at this stage...

Re: Questions to the Spaniards of Rennteam

Jeannot if I can help you with any more questions, please ask !

Re: Questions to the Spaniards of Rennteam

    Actually 2 questions:
    - what would be the approximate road tax for this car?
    - what would be the approximate insurance for this car?

    Cheers!

PS> Actually a friend of mine just went there and imported his boxster, and it is not that straightforward (paperwork etc)...

Re: Questions to the Spaniards of Rennteam

Jeannot. It seems like you will have a good time in Madrid. I am sure your car will miss the great roads around here, but you might find some exiting discoveries around spain. The near by track seems a great opportunity to really enjoy your car !!

Are you moving for more then one year ? If not, keep your swiss licence plates

Re: Questions to the Spaniards of Rennteam

I think it is more likely to be 2-3 yrs. So I would need to swap for Spanish plates. My friend had to spend 700EUR on legal fees to do all the work

Re: Questions to the Spaniards of Rennteam

I live in Madrid and I use my 997 as a daily driver in traffic. No problems so far, bring you 997 with you and enjoy it!

Re: Questions to the Spaniards of Rennteam

At least you won't need to change to Winter tyres...

Re: Questions to the Spaniards of Rennteam

Yeah, I'll have to put my contis T810s on ebay :-)

Re: Questions to the Spaniards of Rennteam

I live in, where when I'm not in Turin for my work, northm of Madrid, alcobendas, very close to Jarama circuit and totally agree to Alex18_996CC. If you are a european I don't think there are going to be any issues about driving in Madrid your Porsche, more or less like in any big european city. But do get a private garage for your car. Welcome and enjoy your staying!!!

I'm sure Jeannot would be very grateful. As a sign of gratitude, he would gladly take care of your wallet while you are busy minding his tyres . Of course he will use it appropriately and help you get rid of all that pesky money .

What we can do is measure the precious tyre material to the tenth of millimeter before I leave and agree on a price for each missing upon my return

Re: Questions to the Spaniards of Rennteam

Crash : Shut the fu.. up !! You are ruining my deals !

Jeannot : Then it is no fun anymore..sorry , put your tyres on Riccardo, better, drive them in the spanish summer or just let them dry to the steal in your basement.
I was only trying to help a fellow Rennteamer and a neighbour !

Re: Questions to the Spaniards of Rennteam

    lol :-)

Re: Questions to the Spaniards of Rennteam

Definetly take your C2S. A drive to the coast(s) is a must!

In Madrid you will be able to get around easily with the METRO should your company car bore you.

Spanish is a very easy language to pick up. You will also find the laid back Spanish lifestyle very becoming.

    Take the position.

    Ole!

Re: Questions to the Spaniards of Rennteam

Once you are there, please, do take your car to Andalucia and drive on the Mediterranean Highway. I did this once from Sevilla to Cadiz then going on to Malaga, Granada and Almeria. Just the drive from Madrid to Andalucia through Despenaperros into Jaen is worth taking your car there. You'll have a fantastic drive with beautiful and dramatic geography, ancient buildings (I believe Cadiz is the oldest continuosly inhabited City in Western Europe) many opportunities to drive fast (unless it is a very different Spain than in 1996). Spain is a beautiful country with a millenary history and very hospitable people and a nightlife unrivalled by any other country I've ever spent time in (I stayed there at a relative's home for 6 months and really miss it). !Buena suerte y que disfrutes la vida en España! !Como España, ninguna!

Re: Questions to the Spaniards of Rennteam

i live in barcelona, but i strongly recomend you bring your 997 with you. in fact you wont have problems with your points of your license. becareful cause there's a lot of speed cams. visit carlo's web for more info on that (www.todoradares.com)
hope you enjoy your stay in madrid. in barcelona we also have a track (montmelo) that you can get in with the car.

Re: Questions to the Spaniards of Rennteam

Hey, thanks for that. I am not 60% for keep and 40% sell.
Let's see by the moving date how this changes :-)
