BTW, the loaner was no Cayman GTS, of course. Just a normal Cayman.

    Re: 718 Boxster

    KMM:

So I've been looking at some of the left-over Cayman GTS models throughout the US. I found one equipped almost ideally for me (silver, PTV, etc.) I was about to pull the trigger but then started reading Auto Motor und Sport's supertest of the 718S. Aside from the amazing Nordschleife time (which I couldn't care less about), they say some rather unflattering things about the handling of the 981 series, including the Boxster Spyder (they do except the GT4 from the criticism). So that gave me pause. Here are a couple of paragraphs; the first one about some nervousness in the rear end (though not inadequate), and a hectic tendency to not track or wander:

"Auch der direkte Cayman-S-Vorgänger des 718 zeigte im Grenzbereich ein bisweilen nervöses, wenn auch nicht unspaßiges Fahrverhalten. Der 981c punktete zwar mit direktem Einlenkverhalten, reagierte auf Lastwechsel jedoch mit einem etwas zu hektischen Eigenlenkverhalten."

By comparison, the 718 is a different animal ("unrecognizable" compared to the 981 in a particular spot of the Nordschleife), with no trace of that hectic behavior:

"Hatzenbach, der Porsche 718 Cayman S ist nicht wiederzuerkennen. Die Wechselkurven nimmt er unaufgeregt und folgt präzise der Linie, die ihm sein Lenker vorgibt. Hektik im Heck? Nicht die Spur."

Now I'm facing a dilemma: more pleasant sounding motor, or better handling (not to mention power). Too much knowledge can be a bad thing... Hopefully someone will buy that Cayman GTS while I dither over the decision...

You need to have a testdrive in both to be able to make the proper decision. Of course the newer one is faster...this is always the case.

Yes, 718 is faster than the equivalent 981 but in my opinion it's a bad case of quantity over quality. The new flat four has characteristics akin to a turbo diesel, including some turbo lag. There is no encouragement to rev the engine either, and at cruising speed there is just a horrible drone. Definitely not what I would characterise as a sports car engine. Steering is slightly sharper but I am amazed at the negative comments from Auto Motor ins Sport's regarding the 981 handling, haven driven both back to back at Porsche's Silverstone driver experience centre I would say the handling differences were marginal.

    Re: 718 Boxster

I've testedboth 718 boxster and boxster S with PDK and I guess that with manual transimission the turbo lag might be more noticeable, but the engine is so much powerful than the previous 981. I drove both at the same time in a mountain road and it was clearly faster and more direct in every aspect.

As mentioned earlier, yes 718 is faster than the equivalent 981 but there is no pleasure from that engine (or at least I didn't get any). When I first test drove the GTS prior to ordering the sound of that magnificent flat six sold it to me, above everything else. When I first drove 718 the exact opposite happened, I lost interest as soon as I heard that rough running engine. The 2.0 diesel in my Volvo sounds better, and is certainly a lot more refined.

    Re: 718 Boxster

Not my impression but it is all about feelings :). All my friends who tested drive both cars said they prefer the punch and they didnt dislike the 4cyl sound.

In fact the cayman S 981 did not have sport exhaust (a little bit muted imho) and they said the 718 sounds better while driving, not at idle of course!

But there is no doubt that the sound of a 6 cyl NA with sport exhaust will be missed!

Well the new four cylinder engine is controversial to say the least... I guess it's what we here in the UK would call a "Marmite" choice, named after the sandwich spread - you either love it or hate it. Smiley

    Re: 718 Boxster

Booked our Boxster GTS in for its 2 year service yesterday, decided to use a dealer close to my work (Portsmouth) rather than the supplying dealer 60 miles (100km) away. Probably going to have the navigation real time traffic information upgrade even though it's not cheap. Asked about a loan car, can pretty much choose any car from the Porsche range, except Cayenne strangely. Was initially offered a 718 Boxster but when I said I had no interest in a four cylinder Boxster they've offered me Macan turbo or 991/2 Carrera S, chose the latter naturally. Also had a conversation with a salesman there, they are expecting announcement of the new Boxster / Cayman GTS "within weeks" power expected to be 370 - 380bhp, not surprisingly but disappointingly still flat four turbo. Don't know whether it was sales BS or not but reckoned it will be faster than Cayman GT4, of which they had two for sale.

    Re: 718 Boxster

Actually, I think the current Cayman S is as fast as a GT4 at the track if you fit the same tires.  So, GTS should be faster with same tires (and maybe as fast with street tires as GT4 on track tires), but will have nowhere near the character and response.

    Re: 718 Boxster

The question is: Does it have to be fast to feel fast?

And if it has to, which kind of fast is the one that creates the joy and thrill of driving? Certainly this is where the GT4 beats them all and probably nothing will come close in the near future.

    Re: 718 Boxster

Doesn't need to be fast to feel fast. I'm moving at 600 mph right now and it doesn't feel very fast.

I find go carting more exciting and a higher send of speed than any exotic I've ever driven.

That is what I suspect too. The GT4 will take the same route as the GT3, more power, more mechanics, more electronics to make it faster, but still keep it safe for every customer... and as a consequence of that less involving.

I wonder if the aftermarket could provide some mods that could transform the 718 series into something more angry and less anodyne.  You know, if you must have a turbo motor, at least make it scream and howl, and celebrate the turbo rush...  yes I know big mods will affect warranty yada yada, but we know people mod anyways.

Maybe the soon to be announced 718 GTS will go some way towards that? Smiley 981 GTS sounds much more angry than the equivalent S models even with sports exhaust. Smiley Promises to be a very quick car, will give current GT4 a run for it's money (white ones excepted of course) Smiley

There is very little styling wise that is an improvement over the 981 to my eyes; changes purely for changes sake. I certainly prefer the frontal styling of 981 GTS to this.

True - also missing 2 cylinders IMO. Salesman reckoned they were selling well and going down well with the customers though - apparently they like the slug of mid-range torque and don't get hung up on the noise. I'll wait for a 6-cyl Spyder Smiley
